Train Driver Instructor

Hi all,

Has anyone got any information or knowledge regarding becoming an instructor?

How do you go into that role?

Are required to be a trian driver for a certain amount of years?

What are the shifts/payscale?

DIs are usually regular drivers who have applied to it, and done the relevant courses. A minimum of 2-5years qualified driving is required varying TOC to TOC. They generally work their usual working pattern (unless released for a specific training course) and the pay is usually a % above the regular mainline driver pay.

Who are ya, where do you work and is this a planned career move for you ?

Each TOC will have its own route to becoming an Instructor and will have various conditions and standards etc attached. I think there are a few Instructors that post regularly and would be able to provide some good general advice. Anything specific and you would need to speak to someone who worked for that specific TOC.

It's just to get an idea and a potential future career. I'm sitting in a talent pool for thameslink so still really early days. Just wasn't sure if you were required to be train driver beforehand.

DI is 'line of promotion' so you go through the grade to get there. Anything operational tends to be in at the bottom, work your way up. Management grades are slightly different.
