MODS - I accidentally put this in the Trip Planning & Reports sub-forum; please can you delete that one?

Hello,

I need to make a very last minute trip from Cardiff to Leeds tomorrow (16th). The cheapest ticket I can find is an Anytime Return via Shrewsbury for £72, which stills seems awfully expensive when I only want to go for the day.

Splitting at Hereford seems to save about £3. I have a 16-25 Railcard.

Any advice please?

Thanks in advance.

You'll want to split so as to maximise the use of Off-Peak Day Returns.

Try Cardiff to Newport, Newport to Ludlow, Ludlow to Shrewsbury, Shrewsbury to Wilmslow, Wilmslow to Manchester, Manchester to Huddersfield and Huddersfield to Leeds. All except Manchester to Huddersfield have Off-Peak Day Returns.

That gives a total of £57.60. Not loads cheaper but a fair improvement on £72.

At the end of the day, you're looking to do a 212.5 mile return journey (so a total of 425 miles) at a day's notice. £57.60, meaning 13.5p per mile, is a pretty damn good price for that considering it is all on walkups! You would certainly be paying about that much in fuel if you drove, let alone all the other costs no-one ever considers.

I think you might be mistaken? The only return fare from Hereford to Wilmslow is the Off Peak Return costing £35.80. The Off Peak Return from Hereford to Manchester is only £37.80.
