Good evening one and all!

I was wondering if anyone ‘in the know’ might be able to enlighten me as to what Northern’s Class 142 diagrams will look like following the timetable change this Sunday. One of my aims this summer (in addition to various other life goals ;)) is to indulge in a few last rides on these trains before they head off on their final outward journey to the great nodding donkey sanctuary in the sky/scrapyard.

I would be interested to hear about any diagrams, but particularly routes like:

Carlisle - Barrow/Lancaster
Lancaster - Leeds
Whitby - Middlesbrough/Hexham
York - Harrogate/Leeds
Sheffield - Manchester Piccadilly

I grew up riding on these trains and they seem to have followed me about wherever I’ve moved to in the UK (for example, when I moved down to Devon to train as a teacher, they turned up there, and then the very same units moved up with me to York when I relocated there immediately afterwards) so I have rather a soft spot for them and will miss them when they’re gone! I’m incredibly pleased that the NRM are looking to preserve 142001, but it won’t be quite the same somehow!

Thanks in advance :D

I don't think that the timetable change will have any great significance for Northern's 142s, so if you know where they operate now, then that's pretty well where they will be operating next week, too. They should disappear completely from the Bolton to Preston section, but they're not plentiful there anyway, most of the remaining diesel diagrams are covered by Sprinters.

The 5 units on Bishop Auckland & Darlington to Saltburn are nearly always 142s, although there might be a booked 156 on there these days? I reckon 4/5 should still be 142s though

Mon-Fri diagrams on SLB/DAR/BIA circuit are still all booked 142. The Danby service from next week is now a 156 previously a 142. And the Battersby service which is currently booked a 142 changes to a 158.

The early morning Saltburn to Newcastle and Carlisle services remain booked as a 156. But during the day from about 0900 onwards will be all 142s.

Unfortunately you will still see them on the Liverpool - Man Oxford Road and Liverpool - Man Airport services. 150's and 156's also do these routes, but you don't have to wait long for a 142 to come along. If you are very unlucky you will get two 142's coupled together.

Southport to Alderley Edge throws one up some mornings I see it at Heaton Chapel so the Southport line may be a bet. Not seen two joined-up Pacers though; more often than not it's two Sprinters or a Pacer+Sprinter combo.

I’m sat on one now at Manchester Piccadilly. Sigh. (It’s going to Sheffield).

Yep. It’s connected to a renovated 150 so not a double barrel pacer.

The 150 is usually leading and is locked out on the return trip because Hathersage platform is currently too short (due to be lengthened by November). Used to have no guard in 150 but may now have one in each unit most days? Anyone joining after Piccadilly would board the front unit as no barriers thereafter.

Two major cities and that running between them. What a sad state of affairs.

I've said this before and I'll say it again - you've just got off a transatlantic flight at Manchester airport and need to get the train back to Liverpool. You are tired, jet lagged, have a ton of luggage and just want to get home. You go to catch your train and it's a Pacer!

Or you need to get to Manchester Airport to catch a plane for your Summer holiday in Costa del Ingles Tossa. Weighed down with luggage, a screaming toddler and a baby in a pram, you go to Liverpool Lime Street to catch the train for the first leg of your long journey, and it's a Pacer.

What a horrible start or finish to your holiday!

It’s quite embarrassing really. However, fingers crossed that the investments will improve things in the long run.

Northern's famous random unit generator produces all sorts of 2 unit combos on these diagrams. I've travelled on a double donkey several times in the last few weeks.

If a donkey is involved, I will always travel in it in preference to something else. Some of you have no sense of adventure :)

Once they are gone suppose I will miss them in a weird, sadistic kind of way! :D

Funnily enough, I got the train to Liverpool today (fortunately it was a 156!) and there are usually half a dozen of the new 195's and half a dozen 331's parked up in Edge Hill sidings.

But today there were no 195's, so maybe they were all being tested and drivers getting trained etc. Hopefully so that on 19th May all of the 142's are magically withdrawn all at once and replaced with 195's.

Then I woke up and it was all a dream! o_O:lol:

Another planet...
The 1719 Leeds to Wigan has reliably thrown up solo 142s of late (the equivalent service a couple of years ago was booked 142+158, but only ran to Victoria then) and I expect it'll continue to do so after the timetable change.

As @CHAPS2034 has already alluded to, it still happens on that line from time to time. Example below, taken at Hoscar, 30 April 2019, on the 1147 Southport - Blackburn (via Manchester Victoria).

Oh dear - the 1980s are back! The morning peak Southport to Alderley Edge was a 142 + reliveried (and possibly refurbished?) 156 leaving Heaton Chapel this morning! By the way, shouldn't this thread be moved over to "Allocations, Diagrams and Timetables?" as we're talking schedules?

And yet there was a pair of them out on this http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/Y53714/2019/05/17/advanced this morning

The Harrogate line is going 170 operated apart from the odd peak time additional booked for 150s. Of course Class 150 = a Newton Heath diagram so could drop as a 142 on occasion.

Certainly were today. 142040 was with 150111 on the 12.39 Man Pic to Rose Hill & 142004 with 142033 did 13.09.
Later 142003 on its own did the 13.39.

142005 with 142028 did the 13.19 to New Mills Central.

I took a ride on 142001 from Wigan NW to Stockport. That set carried on to Alderley Edge

Loads between Wigan Wallgate and Manchester Vic today. 142035 and a 150 did the 10.52 Southport to Leeds.

Manchester Vic to Stalybridge shuttle had 142 on it today

Was in a pair on the 16.49 out of Piccadilly for Sheffield yesterday. The preceding East Midlands (should have been 4 coaches) and following TPE (often 6 coaches) services were both cancelled due to the knock on effects of a fatality at Hathersage about 13.50.

Those two Pacers were VERY well loaded! At stations to New Mills passengers spilled out and had to get back in to allow others to leave. The driver did very well to be only 7 minutes late at Dore Station Junction, but was then rewarded by being held outside Sheffield to arrive 11 minutes late.

No explanation or apology was given as to why the train was so overcrowded, in fact no announcements of any kind were made and a conductor/guard wasn't seen in my carriage. Users stoically put up with it. At least they were getting there and if they looked out of the window the scenery was beautiful. Most were glued to the screens of their electronic devices! The unit I was in was smart and in better condition than a recent tatty Northern 158 I used.

Heaven only knows how the other intending users of the missing 158 and 185 services got over the Pennines. Rather a Pacer for me than no train at all.

The 17:49 Leeds-Harrogate-York is still booked a pair of 142s. That's the only Pacer on the line now.

Except it's the stopper, or at least I presume it is - I suspect that no-one actually travelling between Manchester and Sheffield would use that train unless they were actively choosing to use the stopper.
