It has been quoted on the National Rail Enquiries page that reservations are closed from 24 July to 4 August as a result of engineering work in the Warrington area. Does this also mean that no Adavnces will be issued between stations on this stretch of line or that the actual timing of the Advance release will be slightly later than usual ?

I suspect this will be a case of the timings not having been confirmed by Network Rail as yet. Once they are, I would expect AP tickets to be made available, though there may be a reduction in the number on sale because there will be fewer services on parts of the network.

I need to travel from the West Midlands to Glasgow on Sat 27th July and was debating whether to buy tickets now using a combo of XC and TPE ( while cheap tickets are still available) or perhaps gambling and waiting for the release of Virgin WC Advances from Birmingham New St or Crewe ?

In my experience, you are going to be better off buying now, unless the XC/TPE fares are very high indeed. What prices are you seeing at the moment (I assume splitting tickets)?

I'm being quoted £36.95 from Trainsplit via Manchester .

Twitter Update from their staff :
Advance fares and reservations are due to open from 20th May. Please note that there may only be a select few advance fares available due to the engineering works taking place.

I'm unsure as to how reliable the above information actually is.

If you can see that more than 1 or 2 seats are available, then personally speaking I'd take the risk.
