It's very interesting how on LNER they seem to be being welcomed with open arms, whereas the same trains on GWR were derided as rubbish very quickly, even by those who didn't mind the seats. Despite the fact that both have replaced, er, HSTs.

A nicer looking, non-garish interior on LNER sets helps in a big way, so does the SHOP. Take note GWR. Have a shop not just a trolley service, if your lucky.
I'll be travelling on these in about three weeks time so will have a proper look then.

Is there any rough indication when we may see an Azuma on the Edinburgh-Kings Cross service?

The ambience seems better although I can only say this from youtube clips so it`s probably just psychology thing. As to the shop. Oh dear, you really don`t want to go down that road on the GWR IET thread. Some people seem hell bent on the fact that the shop takes 16 standard seats and so isn`t a good idea. This , despite the fact that on a 10 car (2x5) IET there are to large kitchens doing the square root of beggar all which takes up many more seats than the paltry 16 of a buffet. As you say, c,mon GWR. At least LNER are using their facilities.

When they get clearance to run in electric north of Newcastle, then you are looking at a minimum of 8 weeks before a service will run in passenger north of there, due to them needing to open reservation for Azuma diagrams.

Only just been granted to run to Darlington in electric mode last week

So certainly at the least are looking at end of July into August time.

I don't feel the same worries from the east coast lobby groups, probably because GTR provide so many seats now and cheaper seasons, allowing the intercity operator to be less concerned about the commuter crush.

Agree
It is a silly name from the Virgin PR handbook?
To try and fool people that these are a completely different train from GWRs Class 800 fleet. Did they have to pay Branson to continue using the name?

They said when they announced the first services a while back that they planned Azumas to York from June.

Probably a few months after that.

I would hope they also plan to staff both buffets in double 5-cars. If it's like Virgin's Super Voyagers that was often not the case.

VTWC staff both buffets when running a double set. It only doesn't happen in the case of the same kind of staffing issues that might result in no buffet at all on a Pendolino journey.

7 years ago on two separate journeys it was repeatedly stated that ONLY the rear shop was open. I assumed at the time that was the norm.

I say Uh-zyoo-muh.

Apparently the "correct" pronunciation is az-ooma.
With the big caveat that the correct pronunciation is , in reality, the one that gets used the most...

If this is being pronounced with the 'correct' Japanese pronunciation, it is:
あ(a) - a short a as in 'apple'
ず(zu) - zu - pronounced short (so not zoo)
ま(ma) - short, as in 'manifest'

3 syllables, none of which should be emphasised (if you really have to emphasise one syllable, it would be the first 'a')

And I suspect people will want to know what the correct or faux-correct plural would be. Japanese doesn't generally have differentiated plurals, so the plural of Azuma would be Azuma. But then again, since the word Azuma represents a concept (which by definition is uncountable and therefore not pluralisable) rather than a thing in Japanese, attempting to match Japanese for plurals is pointless. So I would follow English convention and call them Azumas.

Wow 7 years ago! Even staffing levels change in 7 years. I would assume that both shops would normally be open or what's the point.
On a double set there must be catering staff on the front set as the train manager will be on the rear set.

Marvellous

What's the prospect of 'panning-up' at Temple Hirst Jn?
Can't comment for southbound, but northbound trains do depart Doncaster on electric and 'pan down' before Temple Hurst Jn. Driver activated, with balise (ATP beacon) backup. It's about 13 route miles (or half of the new wiring for Manchester - Preston; quite significant)
I know on GWML 'panning up' at speed technically can be done anywhere, but it's only authorised by NR in certain places.

It sounded more like Az-ooma than Az-uma but as you say most people won't follow the Japanese convention.

On a double set there must be catering staff on the front set as the train manager will be on the rear set.

So if they can't provide two catering crews, the front set gets the buffet service.

a 5 + 9 just went South West to Eastleigh. All in white. Preumably to get logo'd up.... on diesel.

It was 800101 (the former Virgin Azuma demonstrator) and 801102 I believe - they haven't yet had the modifications the later builds have had. They'll also be commissioned there (as with the last visitors). Logos'll get added at Donny Carr.

More electric testing north of Darlington tonight; 5Q80 (with visible pantograph light) and 5Q90 are on return trips to Cramlington
