Fares via Halton Curve

Indeed. To paraphrase: if you have to change train, it's not a direct train.

There should be fares created for the Halton route from further afield (or adjustments made to the routeing guide), but they haven't been yet.

I see from a post in the Routeing Guide thread that mapped routes have now been added via the Halton Curve, and the original test journey I used in my first post (Liverpool South Parkway to Llandudno) now offers journeys via Runcorn. Great news!

But still no fares for other reasonable and fastest routes/journeys from Wirral stations - e.g. no through ticket available from Eastham Rake or Hooton to Runcorn via Chester.

Still no "via Runcorn" fares to Chester from Merseyrail Northern Line stations. It's a simple change at Liverpool South Parkway onto the new service via the Halton Curve, but having to buy an expensive "Any Permitted" ticket to use it means most passengers from the north Liverpool suburbs will still be going Merseyrail all the way via Birkenhead.

It looks like the new fares have been added using a very limited number of specific stations only, and not the usual clusters.
You can't even get a ticket from Liverpool Central, never mind the suburbs.

You would think, having spent around £20m upgrading the line, that they might actually want people to use it. (I guess that none of the budget actually goes towards fixing the ticketing).

Another thought. What about Excess Fares between the "via Runcorn" and "via Birkenhead" routes? The potential complicating matter is that Merseyrail doesn't do Off Peak Day Returns (CDRs), but instead issues a TOC restricted Day Saver ticket.

Liverpool to Chester:

"via Runcorn" SDR £7.50
"via Runcorn CDR £6.00

"via Birkenhead" SDR £7.80
"via Birkenhead" no CDR exists but passengers are sold a Merseyrail Daysaver at £5.30

Can you excess up a Day Saver to travel via Runcorn for 35p each way? Is a "via Runcorn" CDR also valid via Birkenhead as it costs more that a Day Saver?

Tickets cannot be excessed to/from Day Ranger/Rover tickets.

The excess payable would be to the equivalent CDR or SDR fare, as available.

No. You need a Saveaway (valid on all TOCs within Merseyside, buses and the ferry) which costs a massive TEN PENCE more than Merseyrail's sham Day Saver.

Another shambles from our not-joined-up railway then. Merseyrail should never have been allowed to withdraw CDRs and replace them with the DaySaver. It has implications for RailCard holders not getting discounts and also here for excess fares.

At Helsby this morning the station ticket machine couldn't issue a via Runcorn ticket (£6.00)

Bought a mobile one instead. The tickets were also available from the conductor.

As a separate issue the first train was well loaded......

I wonder how many people had valid tickets for the first train or would it not be possible to reach the first train without a valid ticket, given the time of the morning it was running.

Just to answer my own question from before the service started, I used a Cheshire Day Ranger via Runcorn yesterday without problems.
