At a complete guess, perhaps the Inverness-Aberdeen diagrams will therefore be far more fluid in teens of booked traction than the other InterCity routes.

I also wonder if all the Inverness-Aberdeen are going to be units, what will happen to the HSTs that were otherwise going to operate services on that route.

Probably. For example, the 2035 Inverurie to Inverness should be an HST, but it isn't. It was last night though.
Any 'no show' of an HST will, possibly be for any sort of operational reasons - eg, a failure somewhere else.

I appreciate that and for a little while at least that's unavoidable, nevertheless it seems to be getting better.

Looks like the available HSTs are being concentrated on Aberdeen route. The odd one doing Inverness to Ed or Glasgow and today an Inverness to Invervurie shuttle.

Not totally as booked if Real Time Trains is to be believed. 19:16 from Aberdeen to Edinburgh is down as a "Diesel loco trailing load 324 tonnes" or HST in Real Time Trains but has been a 170 so far this week. Still better than no train at all though.

All the HSTs have this Timing Load. Remember the Timing load is not what is booked to work the train so there is nothing to be believed as they don't change the Timings on a day today basis.

It would seem I was misinformed - the 2035 Inverurie to Inverness tonight was, indeed, an HST! Apparently it was put on the diagram at short notice.

Well apparently there aren't dedicated diagrams so it may not be a regular thing.

Nevertheless nice to see the HSTs are making it to all the Inter7City routes.

There ARE dedicated diagrams - that service was booked for an HST. I heard it was placed on the diagram about 1hr before leaving Inverness in the evening. It, presumably, was released for traffic by maintenance. I had this set last week, one power car had 2 traction motors isolated & was dropping amps to zero as well (engine powering, but no traction power at all). It ran like a dream yesterday!

I thought there must be, as not all drivers are passed on them yet.

Are there still regular issues with the power cars then?

No, not all of us are HST passed, although most of us are now. There's a separate non-HST roster now. This power car has had 2 motors isolated for a while now (43163), it's been fixed now & is running spot on. I've not had many HST jobs, so I can't comment on the rest of the power cars - the last 3 jobs I've had have been with the same set!

So it was a known-issue. Good that it's been fixed.

What are the chances of that!

Yes it was a known issue,it has been running about for several weeks like that at least they put a note up in the cab telling they were isolated and that notch five was also isolated. There are a few power cars out there with issues though of a minor level.

Would that affect timings much or are the short sets powerful enough to cope?

The performance isn't affected that much the one that had the two traction motors isolated you noticed a little on the hills but choice between that or a 170 or 158 I know which I would take.

An HST I presume?

When notch 5 is isolated on one power car does that simply mean that power car can only produce up to Notch 4 power or does it mean if it's leading, the whole train (both powercars) are stuck at Notch 4 max?

does this restrict the set to where it can operate? Thinking Queen Street tunnel and HML gradients might be challenging and keeping to the gentler Edinburgh-Aberdeen route might be more suitable until fixed?

If I remember correctly, 182 has had the same issues

Terry Miller and his team thought of that... Notch isolation applies to that power car only. In situations where one power car is notch 3 max only, a smart driver will put the train supply on that car regardless if it is trailing or leading so that the good car gives all its power to the motors.

I hoped it was like that, as it's more logical so I'm glad to hear the set-up is like that.

Hopefully that won't happen too often.

Was quite a few sets out today , pretty sure 0840 0r 940 right through to 1240 were all HSTs from Glasgow to Aberdeen , one was heading SB from Inverness to Glasgow , 1310 from Queen St HST to Inverness . Took the 1140 from Queen ST to Stirling , very smooth.
Two Edinburgh to Aberdeen services were HSTs in a row too

Aye, 182 had exactly the same for a while.

A 4+2 can climb Drumochter at line speed (60mph) with a single power car - front one was producing zero amps. Very impressive that it can outrun even a 6 car 170!

Pretty much my experience with 43163 producing zero amps too.

It's logical to do that, not really something we've been taught, though - I guess it's not nearly as much an issue on a 4+2 set running at 100mph, as opposed to a full length set trying to keep time on a 125mph line. I didn't bother doing that on 43163 (leading), but I might if it happens again.
