Is there a list of diesel engines that were not saved?

Hi,

I have just got into OO gauge modelling I have been busy building my layout, which is not set in a era as such, but will have diesel engines. I'm not really interested in steam engines.

I would like to run diesels that were not saved for whatever reason, as I am interested in lost railways and trains.

I have already got Dapol's Class 22 model, as none of these engines were saved.

I would like to add to my collection more lost diesel engines. Is there a list of which diesel engines are no longer around and were not preserved?

I’ve had a look at this and come up with these models of classes that no longer exist but are available in 00 gauge model form...

I’ve included classes 17, 23 and 28 too as they either have only one remaining class member or are currently being recreated (the class 23).

Classes:

16 - Heljan
17 - Heljan
21/22/29 - All Dapol, with 21/29 just or about to be released.
23 - Heljan
28 - Heljan
41 (original Warship) - DJM/Kernow Models collaboration, just being released I think?
43 (North British Warship) - Bachmann

One off prototypes:

Falcon (class 53) - Heljan
Lion - Heljan
Kestrel - Heljan

Pioneer diesels:

10000/10001 (LMS twins) - Dapol
10201/2/3 - DJM/Kernow Models

Interesting to see how many of these Heljan have produced. If you were to ask the same question ten years ago then most of these you’d have to build from kits.
Some of the above models may well be collaborations between shops and manufacturers, but I’m not sure which.

There’s probably others to add to the list, and I have a feeling that a couple of those on the list are produced by more than one manufacturer.
I’ll update it if anyone has any more to add.

I'm glad Dapol are doing a few lost diesels; their models are very good.

I just recently got the Class 22 (nicknamed 'sad eyes ' due to the shape of the windows on the front and back); the engine has lights and runs very well.

I thought the idea of using lost diesels makes my layout more interesting, though I expect non-lost locos to make an appearance sooner or later.

Locomotives that don’t exist anymore do make very interesting models, for a start it’s nice to see something in 3D that you’ve only ever seen pictures of...
I really love the prototype locos like Kestrel and Falcon. The models of them look really good.

Another long gone type that’s worth mentioning is the Blue Pullman which I think is produced by Bachmann.

I watch a few model train review channels on YouTube.

Heljan has left me with mixed feelings and so has Bachmann over the quality of their models.

I saw a review for a Heljan diesel; the guy only got the train out of the box and the bottom of the engine fell off completely. It was a new model, not second hand.

Bachmann have good detailing but poor motors, so I tend to stick with Hornby or Dapol. I only once had an issue with a Dapol model, but it was soon sorted out.

I believe Triang produced a Blue Pullman in the 1960s and I've not seen the Bachmann one.

It's a shame that some diesels were not saved but you can't save everything.

Bachmann have good detailing but poor motors

The battery boxes can be loosely fitted on Heljan locos but its a simple matter to refit them preferably with a spot of glue. Never had a problem with Bachmann, the "poor motor" is questionable, yes they are 3 pole not 5 pole but a modern 3 pole motors are pretty the same as 5 pole ones in terms of performance and the amount of Bachmann locos trundling around exhibition layouts indicates there is not reason not to use them if they fit the period / setting of your layout
