Labour have a fantastic local mechanism for campaigning. That is what will have win this by election. Brexit party with a supporting organisation simialr to a "normal" party might well have succeeded. At present they rely on the nige factor. Couple that with the dull party mechanisms seen elsewhere and they will be a formidable opposition ( until they nigel moves on to his next host)

Your conparison with the euro elections is not a good one. That was focused on a very narrow issue. Further Labour did not really campaign and absolutely did not deploy that party machinery to turn out the vote. They did for this by election.

I wonder whether Labour will still have all that party machinery come the next General Election? We have heard of their members voting for other parties in the Euro elections and I'm aware that a relative of mine who's been one for 50 years doing so. She was an active member too, leafleting and canvassing, but won't be in future.

She isnt the only one ;)

There are still lots of momentum types invovled and there still seem to be lots of Corbyn cultists prepared to do the hard work

Will be interesting to see if the Brexit party becomes something like a 'flash' party as has been seen in many other West European countries. My prediction is it will. It's gained immense popularity quickly, I suspect it'll die just as quickly. Interesting if frustrating times for all involved. We've never to my knowledge truly has a flash party in the UK .plenty that have disappeared quickly after slowly building up a small degree of popularity. But nothing comparable to those seen in the Netherlands or for example the Schill party/PRO in bits of Germany.

Would you count the Social Democratic Party (SDP) which was formed in 1981 from a split in the Labour Party and merged with the Liberals in 1988?

I think the problem that the Brexit party has is that the section I have underlined will apply to every by-election where Labour held the seat or was a close second. The Labour candidate seemed to concentrate on lots of local issues - cleaner streets, schools, crime - which could be argued are more council than Westminster but convinced the voters. I don't know how hard the Conservative's campaigned in the Euro's, round my way (Tory, usually send the troops out to get the vote in) not at all, just one misleading piece of junk mail that seemed to forget that the ERG exist. They will be out in force come a Westminster election. Brexit Party (and Lib Dems for that matter) will be pushed hard and unless they get more than the occasional victory, like UKIP did, will be pushed to make much of an impact outside the odd appearance on Question Time. Some bookies had them at 5 to 1 on, and they hadn't picked up that the Labour vote would not switch to Brexit, and they are pretty canny.

LibDems, Greens, and ChangeUK between them.... 34.7% in the Euro-elections last month. 15.4% in Peterborough (LibDem and Green, ChangeUK didn't stand, but it's reasonable to suppose that their supporters would've mainly swapped to the LibDems).

Some of that difference will just be that Remain and LibDem support is lower in Peterborough than nationally. But I suspect there must've been some tactical voting for Labour to try to keep the Brexit party out going on amongst people who voted for one of the strongly pro-Remain parties in the Euro elections.

Peterborough’s new MP is an anti-Semite. Congratulations to Labour for their efficient machine in mobilising voters to vote for her..(!)

I'm getting fed up of the slur against Labour politicians that they are "anti-Semite". Basically this is brought out when anyone expresses any support for the oppressed Palestinian people, or to suggest that there is a disproportionate Jewish influence in UK politics, or even that British Jews have, on the whole, done well economically! It wilfully equates disapproval of the Israeli regime with Hitler-style hatred of Jewish people worldwide. I'd be called anti-Semite for even suggesting this, well so be it - I just don't like injustice, lies and manipulation.

The problem is that isn't true. The things that Ms Forbes commented support under weren't "Isn't Palestine being treated badly" posts, they were "Theresa May is being controlled by the Zionist lobby" posts.

Several actual Labour MPs have expressed their concern (Jess Phillips, Margaret Hodge and others) about her comments. It isn't a slur from the outside, it's actual concerns from fellow MPs based on views that have been expressed.

As for the bit I've emboldened.... oh dear.

Well, that's you done for then, I would 'like' this if I could so that's me as well.

Ann Widdecombe (one of my new MEPs, God help me) asks 'why do we need a bi election when we could have had a straight one?' With acknowledgement to the writing team on 'Dead Ringers' for that.

So Labour have only just held on to the seat and seen their % share of the vote plummet yet Corbyn thinks that somehow means he can win a General Election! What strange times we live in!

Is it surprising he is saying that when several prominent Tories are effectively building Labour up following the result?

Indeed. One of the main Tory leadership candidates is pulling on his jackboots and talking about suspending parliament to get legislation through ... and barely a murmur of protest.

If you don’t want to be called an anti-Semite, don’t like Facebook posts claiming May is a Zionist puppet. And don’t say you like Facebook discussions where the creation of ISIS was a Jewish and CIA conspiracy.

There are so many hard left Jew-haters in the party now it is unrecognisable.

Sadly the current current strategy of whipping up hate, division and envy makes Labour quite impossible for me to vote for.

And what party does it make it possible for you to vote for? It seems to be a trend in politics more recently anyway amongst many sections of society and parties. It really upsets me, but there's hate on every side.

Well, in the Euro election I voted Lib Dem as they were the only party standing in Wales who definitely want to keep the EU and the UK intact. I don't think they hate anybody, though they profoundly disagree with Leavers of course.

Well the Lib Dems and Greens don’t seem consumed by hate. (I don’t vote for either)

Labour has a really big anti-Semitism problem and I think a sizeable minority of its members are anti-Semites to some degree.

Underneath the touch-feely environmentally-friendly stuff I believe the Greens are quite radical Socialists and hate capitalism.

Fiona Onasanya has rather unsurprisingly been struck off as a solicitor.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cambridgeshire-49251372

BBC said:
Fiona Onasanya was sentenced to three months in prison in January after being convicted of perverting the course of justice. She served 28 days.

The 35-year-old, who subsequently lost her seat as Peterborough MP, had worked in commercial property law.

She was struck off at a disciplinary tribunal which found she had "failed to act with integrity".

The panel of three people said she failed to "uphold the rule of law and proper administration of justice" and "acted dishonestly".

She also "failed to behave in a way that maintains the trust the public places in her", they added.

At this point it seems her only future is to join the Brexit Party.

She would also fit in perfectly with the rest of the current cabinet, given how many of them have been previously sacked for lying, or being held in contempt of Parliament

The FACT is that expense-rigger Chris Davies is a CONSERVATIVE politician.
The FACT is that recidivist criminal Tommy Robinson is a UKIP politician.

What's your point?

His "point" is apparently "only Labour has corrupt politicians". Which is complete nonsense
