Responsibilities
The Junior/Trainee driver apprenticeship role is a key part in our future growth plans. The driver apprenticeship is an opportunity to receive a recognised qualification in train driving that is recognised throughout the industry and endorsed by the Institute of Railway Operators and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.
The talent pool offers individuals an opportunity to register their interest in developing a career within our organisation. DB Cargo is creating the Junior/Trainee driver talent pool in readiness for our increased business plans. The talent pool process includes sitting an assessment plus interview and should you be successful you will be entered in to our talent pool for a 12 months period.
Junior/Trainee Drivers main duties and responsibilities include:
Train driving within a designated yards and terminals achieving the
European Train Driving License Part A certification
Becoming competent in location safe methods
Be fully compliant and understand the train driver rules
Be responsible for all freight train working regulations, personal track safety and traction knowledge
All locomotive preparation
Locomotive fueling
Basic locomotive fault finding
Control of train movements from the ground and the locomotive
Use of IT systems
Qualifications
You will need to be a hard-working and a committed individual who has the desire and passion to succeed and start a career within the freight rail industry. In return you will be working towards becoming a qualified Train Driver and beginning your journey within the freight industry. Your progress and success will be down to you but we will support you along the way. You will be assessed in respect of competency, safety, service and attendance along the way.
Our selection criteria for becoming a Junior Driver
Be at least 21 years of age
Have completed at least 9 years education (primary and secondary)
Hold a GCSE grade C or above in Math’s and English, you will be required to provide evidence of this via qualification certificates prior to assessments
Pass a psychometric assessment
Pass a relevant Medical including Drug and Alcohol testing conducted via an approved provider
Have a good understanding of English to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) established by the Council of Europe
Hold a full UK current and valid road vehicle driving license (for manual vehicles)
You must not have taken and failed the Train Driver assessment within the last 6 months
You must not have taken and failed the Train Driver assessment twice before
Not have defective colour vision or had laser eye surgery
You live within a one hour commuting distance from your desired Hub location
