I think they have been recently working in Sweden but initially (2003) they were in Norway. YouTube certainly confirms T66403 working in Norway in 2018.

Yeah, upon further delving I located a few YouTube videos with a more Nordic tasteto them. I guess it shows the level of research that goes into some articles.....basically find the most recent history and go with that

Hope the 37s produced in East Anglia for you today.

This particular class has been pretty good to me today :E

I noticed in the TOPS thread that you happened across a pair of 73s at Ely :o

If the rest of the day is anything like that it will have been rather successful!

It was a pleasant surprise to say the least. A shame they were slightly too far out for a decent picture (well without a decent quality camera anyway) but I'm not complaining too much as the only 73s I'd seen previous to this were the NR minions.

Final leg of my ranger now back into Ely before the 170 thrash back to the Midlands

Less thrash, more moaning and groaning as they attempt to gain speed from the underpowered truck engines

At least I'm off it before it has to drag itself up the incline to the flyover at Nuneaton. I'm amazed they don't have a banker on standby for it

I'm sure @Techniquest can confirm that they struggle up Lickley, especially when wedged out from Bromsgrove passengers (back before the 323s arrived)

In fairness to the 170s, now the station in Bromsgrove has been relocated they do get a better run-up than they used to. However back when they departed Bromsgrove from a standing start at the bottom of the Lickey, they really did struggle! Understandable really for anything except maybe something like a light engine movement!

Admittedly I tend to tackle the Lickey on trains with a 153 on them these days, so I get the noise. Case in point today, I'm now on the 07:09 Hereford-Birmingham New Street, which is 170508+153334+153364 (leaving Hereford the 153s were leading, but I did winner 802009 from Hereford to Worcester Shrub Hill). This working is noteable as it runs non-stop Droitwich Spa to University. Obviously I'm enjoying some DBT to Birmingham!

Sure has been helpful having the 172/0s arrive in the Midlands as it has meant more 153 action for me :D

As for 170s tackling the Nuneaton flyover, I must admit it has been a long time since I last did that. I think it was 170108 from Peterborough to Birmingham New Street in June 2012 on the penultimate move of my 14 day ALR. So whether 170s struggle up the flyover or not I really can't remember!

One thing is for sure though, 170s do still huff and puff up the Lickey. Just not quite as much these days. Time for the non-stop run to University here :D

Nice one Mr Train. Having done the 37s recently myself, this is one report I am looking forward to (especially of course, not that I dislike any of the others ;)).

Looking forward to hearing from your day in my neck of the woods, the 37s are well worth the effort and give plenty of thrash

So, as one with an unhealthy interest in Pacers, could you tell me how many you saw at Newcastle during your time. I'm figuring I'll take a trip some time this year.

Apologies for not responding to your query, I forgot all about it and have just seen it whilst reading through the thread.

You might not require the info now but this is what I saw in terms of Pacers (and how many times I saw them) at Newcastle between 1329 and 1916 when I visited last month:

142020 x3
142022 x1
142063 x2
142068 x2
142091 x2
142094 x3

Anglia Plus Day Ranger - Tuesday 4th June 2019

Part 1 - Feely Ely

I was very much looking forward to this outing as it was untouched territory for me (barring the few 90s I'd seen being dragged to Crewe for servicing) so I had high hopes for a high winner count. I had a plan of action for the day and I had a couple of key targets to hit so I was up and about with the time still starting with a 4 and was at Stafford station in plenty of time to grab my Ranger ticket. However, it would appear that I was too early for the ticket office so it was a large latte from Starbucks and a wander on to platform 1 from where I would pick up the 0555 VTWC service to Euston for leg 1 of my journey to Nuneaton. A quick check on Traksy showed that the fast lines between Crewe and Stafford to be under the control of members of the orange army which meant my Pendolino was slowly ambling along behind the Garston to London Gateway Freightliner working and although it meant my first train of the day would be late, it gave me a chance to take sight of 66564 and edge me another step towards completing the FLR 66 set. It also meant that I was at a success rate of 100% for the day.......ok it was the first train I'd seen and that would be quickly halved by the Super Voyager that arrived shortly before dud for everything 390137 rolled in to take me deeper into the West Midlands. I've previously been keen to check out anything at Rugeley working the Chase line as I still have some WMT 170 and 153 requirements but now there is electricity there, all I was graced with was a dud Desiro.

390137 by The_Train

Upon arrival at Nuneaton (and with RTT not receiving updates) a quick Traksy check had shown that the sleeper was due through within the next 10 minutes. I made a quick dash across to the Nuneaton ticket office to pick up my ranger ticket (Nuneaton still use the proper tickets out of their office) before heading out on P2/3 to see what was on the sleeper. I decided to try and grab some of the coaching stock as well so forfeited an opportunity for a photo but when FLR 90043 passed by rather quickly, I realised that there was no chance of getting any of the coaches. After sighting the usual Nuneaton duds (170, 350, 390s) I headed across to P7 and just before my next traction arrived, 88010 passed through P2 with the 'Tesco Express' destined for Mossend. XC 170638 became my first haulage success of the day as I jumped on the lightly loaded train for my 2 hour jaunt to Ely which would take me into the ranger area. This would be my first trip past Leicester L.I.P having visited Leicester station on multiple occasions and there was plenty to see. 37510 was first into the book, before I caught sight of a green looking D5410/27059 (I'm pretty sure this is what I was getting confused with during a Leicester trip in March, when it took me about 4 goes to get the right number of the 33 logged - at least it exists and I wasn't going totally mad :E) and although there were a couple of duds sat in the main depot I was then able to chalk off 56063, 56077 and 56104 which were sat deep in the sidings looking fairly forlorn. The approach to Peterborough saw us racing an LNER service which enabled me to grab more of their coaching stock after my recent successes in Newcastle, but alas there was no 91119 at the helm so my wait to complete the 91s goes on. The GBRf yard was a little more kind to me as 66784 went into the little book as did 158806 which was spied as we arrived into Peterborough station. There was a 708 (I think) in the platform furthest away from us but there was no way my eyes would stretch that far.

Not so long after this, Ely was reached and as I stepped off the train my eyes were immediately drawn to the far end of the station where I could see these little beauties stabled
73128 and 73141 stabled at Ely by The_Train

Not the best shot due to the distance but thanks to @palmersears on the TOPS thread, I was able to chalk off my first GBRf 73s as 128 and 141 went into the book. A double headed FLR train was sat waiting clearance from the goods line but it was only a pair of duds in the form of 66599 and 66547 but 387121 did become my first Great Northern winner of all time. I have to say, I found Ely to be a lovely little station, with a very clean look to it and obviously an element of pride to their flowerpots which were being tended to. After a quick PNB, I had a stroll down the platform to ID the 2 OTM machines that were also stabled and they turned out to be winners DR77903 and DR73111. The GA stuff was soon under way as well as 170207 fell shortly afterwards before 387121 doubled my Great Northern success
387121 at Ely by The_Train

My next move was to take the underpass across to P1 and even this was nice and clean, certainly compared to a lot of underpasses. From thisnew vantage point I nabbed another 387 with 387103 receiving a big tick and after a dud XC 170 went by, winner for everything 170271 became my 3rd haulage of the day for the jaunt across to Norwich
170271 by The_Train

As I settled in for this journey, I allowed my mind to drift and it wasn't until it was nearly too late that I spotted the HST graveyard at Ely Papworth and unfortunately I was only able to note dud 43190 but despite this it had been a good start to the day with 17 winners already safely in the book along with a bit of coaching stock.

I had intended to get deeper into the day but I've just noticed the time and Killing Eve is on soon so I'm going to leave it there and will probably get part 2 sorted tomorrow morning

It’s been really interesting reading your reports since you joined and started posting them.
There’s something about the way you’ve gone about it that gives me a little pang and reminds me of that feeling of why we all got into this in the first place...

Anyway. That’s a bit deep for this time of day.
Great report sir. I’ve got a photo here of 27059 in happier days at the Basingstoke Rail Day in 1987...

It was one of the first preserved 27s (the first one was 27007, and that’s in a far worse state now).
Hopefully 27059 will get it’s time again.

Typo I think Mr Train. Probably 56065 you saw in the Leicester line. 56063 was scrapped in 2007.
Don’t forget the 172/0 subclass is working for West Midlands Trains now. 004 & 008 worked out of of Nuneaton today.

It was 065, just a little typo on here to make sure someone is reading my reports ;):E

Yeah I had hoped to see one of the 172/0s when I arrived back into Nuneaton that night but the Leamington run had been cancelled and replaced by buses so no luck there. I'll probably head out to grab them once they are all in service

Thanks Cowley, always nice to hear good things about my reports. I have enjoyed a good buzz about the railways and trains since I got back into the hobby (the same buzz I remember enjoying as a child) and there is a real thrill to ticking them off, I won't lie.

It's been a real help during a tough period of my life and having spoken with people both on here and on platforms around the country, I get the impression it helps lots of people who may be facing hardships for whatever reason.

As for your picture of 27059, she is certainly looking much better in your photo than in the stripped back condition I saw her in at Leicester. Hopefully she is being readied for a return to some sort of action though....would be nice to see it back in that BR blue livery

I’ve said it on here before, and I think a lot of us have experienced this - Having this as a hobby has got me through all sorts of difficult times in my life.
I’m probably in the best place I’ve ever been in my life at the moment, but I still love absorbing myself in my hobby (and we all need a hobby, I truly believe that).
Sometimes it’s just good for the soul to do something that serves no other purpose than pure enjoyment...
Amen to that. ;)

Good start to the day.

Ely is a decent station, and there is usually quite a bit going on train-wise. Which is just as well when you miss the -1 connection for the Kings Lynn train and have to fester for an hour!

Good free wifi there too.

Anglia Plus Day Ranger - Tuesday 4th June 2019

Part 2 - Back of the Net

My arrival into Norwich was met with my first 90 sighting but it was 90009 which I'd already clocked on its way to Crewe previously. Crown Point threw up a few bonuses as my first FLIRT sighting went into the book with 745104 being the first of the class for me. I'd received a bit of 37 related gen from @47403 whilst I was on my travels and it was this pleasant sight that greeted me upon my arrival into Norwich
37419 & 37407 at Norwich by The_Train

Yes it was dud 37407 with the lovely looking 37419 stabled together. The day was certainly throwing some nice sights my way with the 73s followed by this. I couldn't let these added bonuses remove my focus from the main purpose of the day so I headed down to the end of the lengthy island platform which accommodates platforms 1 and 2 to ready myself for what would hopefully be a stream of required 90s. However, it was 170273 which fell first before I nabbed my first 90 as 004 went in the book along with its rake of coaching stock - the DVT was 82118 which was the only GA DVT I'd seen elsewhere previously. Hopefully this wasn't a sign of my luck turning o_O It did show signs of changing when 90003 became the next dud 90 but I did at least require all of the coaching stock along with 82107 at the other end
90s at Norwich by The_Train

After devouring an early lunch, 153314 became my first GA dogbox to head into the book as it headed out to Crown Point with an ECS working before 156412 arrived with a service from Great Yarmouth. It was just after this arrival that a gent approached me wanting gen on the FLIRT movements and after a little conversation he told me that the arrival of 156412 meant he had cleared all DMU so he was now hoping for the newer stock to come out to play.....and here I am getting excited at the sight of my first GA 153
156412 by The_Train

After the gent had left to go and grab a pic of his final 156, I was left to mark off dud EMT 158774 before another rake of LHCS arrived with 82152 leading the required formation and 90008 at the rear. 170206 was next to be seen and was quickly followed by 153309, before 82127 lead yet another rake of required coaches into the sidings with 90007 powering from the rear. The winners were starting to come thick and fast and it was part of the new generation of GA stock that went into the book next as 755410 made an appearance from Crown Point
The old and the new for Greater Anglia by The_Train

More unit success next as 156402 arrived with 82121 not far behind being powered by 90014 - more coaching stock into the book as well
Greater Anglia 90014 & 90008 by The_Train

158770 broke my run of winners but 156417 soon got the book of sights working again but another dud EMT 158 was soon following. We were graced with more tractor action just after noon when the Great Yarmouth working arrived back with 37716 leading the rake of Mk2s back into Norwich
37716 at Norwich by The_Train

This was quickly followed by the surprise arrival of Europhoenix 37800 into the station sidings
37800 at Norwich by The_Train

5x 37s in one place is enough to make anyone a little excited especially when you know that 2 of them are going to provide haulage very soon. Before that though, I knew I had another LHCS set to see and was duly rewarded with 82102, another batch of coaching stock and 90011 all heading into the book. The time had now come to head over to P5 where a couple of beasts were waiting to make their next journey to the seaside so I took my place at the droplight of the lead carriage right behind 37405 which spent the next 35 minutes turning me back into a kid as it thrashed it's way into Great Yarmouth. After a couple of pics here.....
37405 on the blocks at Great Yarmouth by The_Train
37716 at Great Yarmouth by The_Train

....it was on to the lead coach once more for the journey back to Norwich behind 37716. I decided to enjoy the comfort of the Mk2 seating for the return journey. From here I was able to grab a rake of LHCS sat at Crown Point with 90012 and 82132 in attendance but with this covering much of the depot, I was only able to add 755418 to my collection of FLIRT sightings. My return to Norwich was met by dud 156417 and with a short turnaround onto the next haulage, I had to make a quick dash up platform 1 to nab 82143 and 90002 and their coaching stock. My next move was a trip to Suffolk and it was to be one of the few non-LHCS workings between Norwich and London as 321318 and 321313 became winners for everything. Another trip past Crown Point did allow me to sight a few different things as 755417 was spotted along with 82139 and a lone carriage attached to it. 156418 was also parked up and then it was past Trowse Yard (I think that's what it's called anyway) where I could spy a red DB shed. The bushes blocked my sight of the number but @palmersears was on hand to assist again and it transpired it was winner 66192 waiting for its rake of wagons to be loaded.

I settled in after that for what turned into a very noisy and fast journey down to Ipswich. Those 321s are certainly some EMU to ride on (although the seats are bloody uncomfortable). As I'm hungry now, I shall leave the tale there but Norfolk had given me another 31 winners and plenty of coaching stock so my daily total was sat at 48 winners so surely Ipswich would help me to reach my target of 75......wouldn't it?

37716... yes.... I require that one for haulage!

I have got everything crossed that it sticks to the passenger diagram for another week as I'm due to reach Norwich on Thursday afternoon.

Looking forward to the next installment of your report..

Clearly a very good trip so far! Looks like Norwich really was good to you.

37716 I am a bit jealous of, non-ETS 37s are not exactly common for haulage after all. Especially not on a regular service train!

Anglia Plus Day Ranger - Tuesday 4th June 2019

Part 3 - Heading South

After an interesting run down to Ipswich, where we went past 66569 on the approach, we were welcomed into the station by 86607 and 86639 which were stabled just outside the station. Both are duds but it's always nice to see these workhorses as opportunities may be limited in the not so distant future
86607 & 86639 stabled at Ipswich by The_Train

Unfortunately the other thing that had welcomed us to Ipswich was a torrent of rain so I decided to make a quick pit stop at Starbucks (not my favoured choice of coffee outlet) for a latte, before I had a roam around the 4 platforms to get my bearings. 170272 became my first winner here but a bit of repetition kicked in as the 82107/90003 combo became my first repeat of the day. A venture over the footbridge onto P4 saw me grab my first 360 as 106 arrived before 153335 also headed into the book. I'd also spied a shed hidden at the far end of the FLR sidings and it took a good wander out into the rain to find out it was dud 66540 but the next unit was definitely not a dud as 170205 went into the book. A couple more dud LHCS sets came and went before 360110 was next to be chalked off
360110 at Ipswich by The_Train

170207 only affected the dud count, but a triple 321 set certainly had a better part to play as 321440, 321326 & 321430 all went into the book of sights. A dud dogbox came and went before a GBRf shed made an appearance into enemy territory as winner 66724 passed by to take my GB shed requirements down to 14 (16 when the other 2 Swedish sheds arrive)
GBRf 66724 heads through Ipswich by The_Train

After another repeat sighting of a 90 set, 90015 became yet another dud 90 that I'd previously ticked off during stints at the local but it did at least come with a rake of required carriages as well as DVT 82105 which was chalked off
90015 at Ipswich by The_Train

90009 was the next dud (having sighted it earlier on my way into Norwich) but it did produce another set of carriages for the book of sights as well as 82103 at the other end. This was quickly followed by more dudness thanks to 90014 and 82121 but the next 170 did provide a winning score as 170208 was ticked off and this was quickly followed by a double combo of 360s as 107 and 116 also went into the book. I'd headed back across to P2 by now as I'd caught sight of a freight move that was due only to be disappointed to see dud FLR 66592 emerge from Ipswich Tunnel with a rake of containers
66592 emerges from Ipswich Tunnel by The_Train

After a PNB, it was back to the duds as another 90 set came and went before 170203 became the latest of this class to fall into the winner category. Having seen off dud 153335 I noticed that a FLR shed had crept into the loco sidings and after a quick dash over the footbridge was able to see that it was dud 66951 arriving home. 170204 kept my winner count ticking over but it was duds galore in both P2 and P3 as 2x London Liverpool Street services through up dud 90 sets. By this time, signalling problems at Shenfield were causing issues with most services being delayed by approx 40 minutes through the area and it left me with a decision to make about my departure from Ipswich. I plonked myself down, and whilst shoving more sandwiches down my throat I made the decision to now head back to Norwich on the 1707 service which would now be arriving into Ipswich just 15 minutes before my planned haulage home at 1800. That left me with another 45 minutes in Suffolk which was time to see 66540, the shed that had been parked up all of the time I'd been there, head out from its slumber
66540 by The_Train

My next sighting was a much needed winner as 170270 went into the book to bring a halt to a long run of duds, but I was soon back to it when dud 90012 rolled in. Also, heading into the dud book was a pair of FLR sheds on their way home as 66555 and 66505 ventured into P2 before heading back out to reverse back into the FLR yard
A pair of sheds by The_Train

It wasn't long after this that 82127 rolled in being powered by 90007 to haul me back up to Norfolk but Ipswich had one last gift for me as 156409 became the final winner of my time in Suffolk.

It was a very busy service so I decided to remain in the vestibule, particularly as my first point of call upon boarding was to make use of the facilities on board considering cleaning staff at Ipswich had closed off the gents for cleaning. It was an enjoyable ride as we were pushed back North by the 90 on the rear and passing Crown Point saw me bag an additional winner as 82114 was spied along. I didn't have a massive amount of time at Norwich but there was enough time to snaffle 170201 which was sat on the blocks as I arrived back. A quick wander around the platforms found me the pair of 321s which had taken me to Ipswich earlier along with a dud 170 and just before I went to find my next haulage, I spotted duds 82143 and 90002 creeping into P1 with a working that had pretty much followed us from Ipswich. With nothing else of note to see, I went off to P3 to jump aboard 158808 for my first trip on this EMT unit as I headed back to Ely. There was nothing new on Crown Point for me to grab on departure but I did see 66192 parked up and waiting departure from Trowse after I'd seen it going through the loading process earlier. It was an uneventful journey back into Cambridgeshire but my arrival at Ely was greeted by 66532, unfortunately another dud. After a quick PNB I headed through the underpass to P1 where I made it just in time to grab some crisps from the shop and whilst munching on these, I was able to chalk off 387119. Another shed, in the form of dud 65534, came and went before dud EMT 158847 was also added to the dud list. My haulage for the penultimate leg of my journey home would be courtesy of XC 170107, required for haulage if not sight and having found a table seat on the lightly loaded service I was able to nab a final 387 for the day as 117 was marked off.

There wasn't much to see on the journey until we crept past a NR test train in the sidings at March with required 67023 at the helm. Things got even more interesting as we headed into Peterborough as I was able to grab a couple of 365s that were stabled, 365506 and 365510 both getting the treatment. Departure from Peterborough took us past the GBRf yard and having seen just the 1 loco there in the morning, I was happy to see no less than 5 stabled there now. Unfortunately 66758, 66735, 66775, 66776 & 66736 were all duds so with the light fading it was time to stick the earphones in and enjoy the rest of the ride to Nuneaton. I had a near 60 minute layover here unless the previous LNWR service to the one I was scheduled on was running a few minutes late and I was amazed to see a pair of 350s in P2 and after having made a mad dash across the footbridge from P6 I found the units to be locked out. The service I'd hoped they were for was in fact stuck at Rugby, with a trespass incident (staff at Nuneaton told me someone had been train surfing on a container train) at Atherstone earlier in the evening still causing chaos.

This delay did allow me to see a bit of late evening freight action as 66553 went by on route to Felixstowe before 66740 went through P7 with a working to London Gateway. The staff at Nuneaton kept me informed of the goings on and it was good news as the service being held at Rugby had been cleared and was on its way to Nuneaton and even better news (for me anyway) was that it was to run fast from Nuneaton to Stafford meaning I'd be home a good half hour earlier than expected. Whilst awaiting the arrival of this, 70002 went past with a working to Scotland and 66076 headed North towards Grangemouth before 350109 arrived to take me on the final leg of my journey and not so long afterwards, and 17 hours after departing Stafford, I was back on home ground with plenty of fond memories of a day in Anglia.

Day summary is below:

For Sight

Winners: 72
Coaching Stock Winners: 98
Classes completed: N/A
Sub classes completed: N/A
TOCs completed: N/A
TOC sub classes completed: N/A

For Haulage

Winners: 11
Total Mileage: 512 miles 34 chains
Classes completed: N/A
Sub classes completed: N/A

Didn't quite get the 90s cleared with 4 still to find along with 4 DVTs. Just 202 left from the GA 170 fleet and a few 153s and 156s but plenty of 321s left to find - I assume these tend to run different routes of Liverpool Street? Not a bad outing though with plenty of winners and worth it for the ride behind the 37s if nothing else

Sounded like a productive day :)

The 321s tend to run Liverpool Street to the Essex branches, and a good number only come out to play during the peaks.

37716... yes.... I require that one for haulage!

I have got everything crossed that it sticks to the passenger diagram for another week as I'm due to reach Norwich on Thursday afternoon.

Looking forward to the next installment of your report..

I really hope it's still there for you, I've not heard anything to the contrary so fingers crossed. Well worth anyone getting down there before they disappear

37716 I am a bit jealous of, non-ETS 37s are not exactly common for haulage after all. Especially not on a regular service train!

If you can get down there before they are taken off the route, then do it. Both locos are awesome to travel behind.

I didn't even realise it was non-ETS. Nice to add something a little more unique to the memory bank then

Ah right, that would explain why I only saw a few then. Ones to chase on another day down that way. You were right about the ride on them though, very noisy and wild
