Cheers - seems like the ideal place to have them, with ADJ shunts straddling the reliefs, and the odd tripper along the Uskmouth branch

I don't know much about the jobs down there, but if there's tripping down a branch line, I doubt the junior drivers would be able to do that.

Either way, it's still a good job and a good route into mainline driving further down the line.

To obtain an NVQ will often be a result of an apprenticeship in the first place, which would have meant you’d have needed the GCSEs in the first place.

No I'm afraid, an NVQ is a vocational qualification, entirely separate from GCSE's, depending what training provider / college is involved you can do an apprenticeship without having maths & english GCSE'S ( C or higher) but not for any government funded courses

I previously worked for a training provider before joining the railway, a GNVQ is the equivalent to GCSE's, some GNVQs would require you to study level 1 or 2 numeracy and literacy, level 2 is equivalent to GCSE A-C

Think it's £29,253 now, plus fuel allowance for some areas.

That's for a junior though. Not sure if an apprentice would be less?

So frustrating when jobs are put up without salaries.
Whilst obviously they dont want to attract people who just in it for the money, people need to know if they will be able afford to pay their bills when training.
Is this a normal trainee driver and we can refer to the Aslef site for salary? or a yard driving type job on reduced pay?

If db are using the Apprenticeship Levy to fund this, then I think its the Levy that dictates the entry criteria.

I wouldnt think so as if you havent got GCSE maths or English the education partners do exams for you to sit.... I think it's just a way for them to sift easier due to the huge numbers who apply.

A company can always work around the GCSE criteria, although it’s far easier for them no doubt if applicants have these already. As you say, easier to sift I guess?

Somebody once told me that GCSE's are only valid for 5 years, not sure who and not sure if its correct though .

Functional skills/key skills level 2 can often be accepted by other employers as an alternative to GCSE's so that's maybe worth checking for those that dont have the GCSE grades.

Not sure about the validity after 5 years. I do know employers generally dont care about them and are more interested in your skills etc. I've only ever been asked once for proof of my degree as well

There's no 'yard driving on reduced pay', it's the rate for the Junior driver if that role exists where you're applying.

I've posted the salary above, although I'm not sure of the 'apprenticeship salary'. It could possibly be the same as the JD salary.

Don’t worry to much about the GCSE side of things if you don’t have them you will be able to do them along side the train drivers apprenticeship at the high speed collage,
It’s just a few small assignments to get the grades required,

The JD role is Yard based but depending on the yard you are required to cross mainline so all future JD’s are required to do the full rules course my guess is the train driver apprenticeship is the same as a JD role but with the added apprenticeship,

As someone whose just gone through the process with DB I can confirm the salary for Junior Driver is £28.5k. However the vacancies up are for apprenticeships and as we all know apprenticeships can be paid a minimum of £3.90 per hour.

It’s unlikely an apprenticeship such as this will be that low though. Likely no less than £20k I’d imagine taking in to account usual trainee driver salaries (as with signalling and other railway apprenticeships).

I earned £40 a week back in the day with my apprenticeship. The system has come a long way since then and unless you’re a 16-year old school leaver, apprenticeships will pay ‘enough’ to live on.

Unfortunately, I think it should have been worded 'Cambridgeshire'. It's Cambridgeshire Hub which is for Peterborough Yard and Station.
