Evening knowledgable types.

Would anyone be able to tell me what these brackets that seem to be fitted to certain class 37s just above the centre headcode were for?

Some have them, and some don’t - like 37423 pictured here:

I’ve found various pictures online of refurbished ones that retained them, but not many 37/4s that have?

Any help much appreciated.

Headboard brackets.
That’s what I call a quick reply!

I wondered about that. It’s hard to imagine many of the surviving ones ever having carried headboards in service.
Were all the central headcode ones built with them, or would non boilered ex Welsh ones not have had them for example?

I'm told the headboard brackets were a standard fitting to Western Region 37s as new. They were also used to mount the headlamps used for the Central Wales line being conveniently sited.

Ah now that’s ringing a bell. It also makes sense as to why none of the ex Scottish ones seem to have them.

I'm not entirely sure why only WR ones had them as new, but that's how it seems to be. Did the WR even use 37s on named expresses with headboards?

Yes. In the days when G F Fiennes was General Manager of the Western they were used for a short period of time, (one summer timetable) to double head the Cornish Riviera. That shifted... :D

I bet it would! About the same sort of power as a Deltic.
