Contract win for Derby

Bombardier has its being reported won a contract to build and provide rolling stock for a large (60 mile) monorail in Egypt with the 70x4 car monorail trains to be built in derby between 2021 and 2024 on a new production line.

Its the first UK rolling stock export since the Gautrain.

Derby train-maker Bombardier has been named as the preferred bidder to build a new £2.65bn monorail in the Egyptian capital Cairo.

The manufacturer said the rolling stock will be built at its Derby plants.

The project will see 34 miles of monorail built connecting the New Administrative City with East Cairo and a second line of 26 miles between Sixth of October City and Giza.

The award is subject to contract and final confirmation.

Useful work for Derby, though rather going against how the factory has operated in recent years which has tended to be high volume orders of fairly standardised product

True, but surely will take some time to get the facilities ready as it is still quite a different product to all the Electrostars/Adventras they've been turning out.

Speaking of which, I'm not so up to date on their order books, but will this affect other orders? Or mean a lot of capacity is being used, therefore they might not be so competitive in the UK rail market?

I assume it'll only take up a relatively small amount of the factory. After all Derby would have been hoping to be building the New Tube for London which they lost to Siemens, and that would have been alongside their Aventra work
