Hello all,
Having read through a lot of these threads, I have seen a lot of people mention the different stock which will be heading for the National Railway Museum when it is taken out of service. I'd like to have a current list here so that people such as myself who are interested can have a look and see what the NRM will have to offer in a few years' time!

Here's the list. I'll update it regularly:
-Class 43 43002 "Sir Kenneth Grange"
-Class 91 + Mk4s*
-Class 313 313201
-Mk3s
-Class 66 66779 "Evening Star"
-Class 08 08616
-Class 303
-Class 47 47798 "Prince William"
-139 001 & 002
-A Class 321
-The remains of 390 033 that are at Crewe
-A Class 150/2
-A Class 159
-An S Stock
-MK4 DVT 82200
-Class 442 401 DT
-Class 92 locomotives
-Tyne & Wear Metro Vehicle

And plenty of others. I'll update the list with more soon.

As @gazthomas has said (Post #2), some of the items in this list may not be going to the NRM but it gives you a good idea.

-Peter

*The Class 91 is likely to be 91031 "Sir Henry Royce"

I thought they were gifted items, the prototype Deltic springs to mind, as does 47798.
The pacer is another.
D6700 was given to them by EWS.
66779 will also be gifted when its main line career is over.

OK. Thanks. I'll add 66779 to the list.

Do the NRM buy them though? Aren't some 'gifted' as it were?

I am surprised 58050 hasn't been saved. It is the last diesel locomotive built by BREL.

Along the same lines, I'd like to see 59001 as the first loco built overseas for the UK main line and 60100 as the last mainline diesel built by British workshops. It's to be hoped that the NRM are giving serious thought to how they represent the privatised 21st century railway.

The HEX units are coming of lease soon. They were the first to built for a private operator, albeit, BR and Heathrow Airport Authority.

Oh yes - they probably are gifted. But I'm not all-knowing in anything, let alone the NRM! :)

I'm not sure everything is but I know some has been such as their Shinkansen driving car. Mind you, they did shell-out for Scotsman.

OK. So the Japanese rail people (apologies for not knowing the name - Japan Rail?) gave the NRM a power car. Bit random. But hey. We got to see Flying Scotsman back out and running! And we also got to see the trespassers out and running!... from the BTP!

Both 58050 and 60100 are designated for the National Collection.

There's a few points on that in terms of what they have designated:
- 91111 is not actually designated, it's the "Nameplates, vinyls and power car number 91111 "For the Fallen". Quite apart from 91111 being a loco not a power car, exactly how do you preserve vinyls? They will fade over time.
- There is no 442 set 201. It's 401.
- Likewise, they have made the designation for 43002 against Porterbrook. Even though it is Angel owned and every source says so.

Would 'requisitioned' be a more accurate term, given that the designations basically say "we want that"?

Do they always? I'm not saying they don't pick and choose a bit, I'm sure they do, but I believe some exhibits were not entirely 'chosen' by the NRM as it were.

Well I didn't write

That's why I added 91 111 as a whole because it'll be eaiser to have the entire loco.

I know you didn't - it's in the RHDAB document on their website.

The whole thing with 91111 is a farce - it's all about the sticky-back plastic applied to it rather than any historical significance of the loco. 91131 is designated and is far more significant: last express passenger loco built in this country and the last loco built at Crewe Works.

One of the Transport Acts (1968?) made legislative provision for the NRM, being able to claim any redundant rail asset at no initial cost. This was of course when they all belonged to BR. Not apparent how that carried over to privatisation. It's notable that for a "National Museum" they don't have a single item from Northern Ireland.

I assume then they are no longer to claim items for no initial cost?

Think most of the Northern Irish stuff (and indeed Southern Irish), goes to Cultra to the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum.

Would be nice to have some Northern Irish stock I suppose bit being a smaller network and with I believe a smaller % of preserved stock that wouldn't be too easy.

Mind you, they could perhaps have had that spare 80 Class power car that NIR only recently scrapped.

It’s covered under the Railway Act that set up privatisation.

I can't help but think that 91111 would be more suited to somewhere like the Imperial War Museum than the NRM considering the reason why it's been designated for preservation. Certainly for the NRM 91110 (speed record holder) or 91131 (last loco built in Crewe) would be more appropriate for them than 91111. I'm not saying that 91111 shouldn't be preserved, indeed it's livery is in itself something worth preserving, but I am not convinced that it would be the most appropriate 91 for the NRM. Nonetheless, I do somehow suspect that 91111 will be the only 91 that the NRM take on, seeing as they only seem focused on what they think would look good in the Great Hall as opposed to what's actually historically significant.

Considering Mallard is only significant as an A4 because of it's record, you'd think they'd go for '110 for the same reason.

I think though that the vinyls should perhaps go to the Imperial War Museum, and 91131 to the NRM, but that likely won't happen.
