Hi,

Apologies if this is the incorrect part of the forum to post this. My N-Network, zones 1-5, annual ticket has faded, to the point of making it difficult to read.

I use Abellio corporate discount, if that makes any difference.

When I needed a reprint due to fading (It's due to be renewed in August) I popped over the road to BHM's ticket office with an encode letter.

I've visited the Virgin staffed ticket desk this morning, to be told that I'm not on their system and I can't be put onto their system. I'd need to visit either Moor St or Snow Hill, as it's a regional ticket.

Can anybody shed some light on why I'm not "on the system", please? I've printed the encode letter again with instructions to rail staff, but the member of staff waved her tablet (computer) vaguely around and said they're on "this system now" and can't carry out those instructions.

Advice received with thanks.

Unfortunately, you are only strictly speaking entitled to a season ticket replacement from the retailer who sold you the ticket - see Condition 37.1 of the National Rail Conditions of Travel:
If a valid Season Ticket is damaged, can no longer be read easily, or no longer works in automatic Ticket gates, we will replace it without charge. You should ask the retailer from whom you originally purchased your Season Ticket to do this for you.

Virgin could do this a long while ago but more recently said their systems were changing and they couldn't anymore. If your n-network ticket works in a ticket barrier you should win a prize; it's that rare for them to operate the gates these days.

Thanks for all responses. I think I can get it done at Wolverhampton, as it's not a VT station. Just need to find that encode letter now...

You just need to remember to go to the TOC who sold it because they will have a GoldStar record for it.

Good to hear. A rare benefit of the changeover of Wolverhampton to WMR!

It's had a lick of paint since the changeover :) The new station is coming along quickly as well.

The only problem with that is, I'd have had to post it back to our corporate travel company, then wait for them to reprint it. I'd have got my tickets refunded, but it's still a paint in the arse.

I believe any station should be able to do a reprint. Corporate travel providers, such as Trainline, issue a letter instructing booking offices how to do it. A family member had a problem getting a Trainline issued season ticket reprinted as his local station refused to do it. Got the encode letter from Trainline, took it back to the same ticket office (and clerk) and it was sorted.

Suspect refusal to do this in many cases is a result of poor training.

If that were true it would say "must", it doesn't it says "should".

Which is probably why the NRCOC say you should go back to the original retailer because they know rail staff from other companies can't be bothered to find out how to do it; mind you I have had the lazy gits at different stations from the same train company refuse - GTR, looking at you.

I know how to do it but won't do so if the origin of the ticket cannot be properly verified - there are people out there abusing the process and getting the railways to issue them with free annual season tickets.

The issuing company will have a record of the ticket sale on their database so the clerk will be able to verify it there and then if the IT is working.
