As from tonights up service, the internal configuration of the berths has changed to all double. If you book a single, the top bunk will be lifted
Don't try to book for Friday down - 6 sleepers, all booked as doubles such is demand !

I wonder wether it would have been possible to have ordered 2 additional IETs but had them fitted out as sleeper sets?

Metal beds "upholstered" with 4mm of foam over the metal.
Bedding with a lurid green stripe, preferably GITD.
Standard class--------------engine under bed.
First class-------------------no engine under bed.
No buffet.

Beds, quite literally, would be ironing boards...

And train formed as 2 x 5 car, with a trolley just in one half, on the occasions the train isn't short - formed.

Unlikely due to the tight margins that the CNR runs to, hence the refurb of the Mk3s for another 10 years use.

It's the bucket list for me tonight. Going on the sleeper from Paddington to Penzance. My first ever UK sleeper trip. 8 hours in Penzance/Marazion and then first ever trip back on an IET. Gortex is packed as weather looks unsettled to say the least.

It's really quite special, the views are lovely when you wake up.

Random Sunday afternoon web wandering :D No Sleeper berths available on any service from Paddington over the next 2 weeks o_O o_O Good to see it's 100% occupany, wonder if another extra coach all year round Friday down Sunday is still happening as per long term plan our Long Rock insider mention earlier this year ?

There's nothing this Mon or Tues, but there's a berth available on Weds night.
Even when you can't book, I find it doesn't necessarily mean there isn't anything. For example a friend and I went down one Friday night back in April, on the eve of the pz open day, and once on board we asked the steward if any berths available, and indeed there were, two or three of them iirc.

People can and do cancel bookings (even after departure partial refunds are possible depending on type of ticket booked) - I've often heard people enquring on the night in the Lounge Car for berths to be told they'll be added to the list for possible no shows at Reading. Not a gamble I'd take personally for the chance of spending the night in the seats.

Now looked at Weds night and it's only offering seats again.
Interesting, still showing for me. I did adult standard single, pad-pnz, 18/9/19, dep after 2300. Shows sleeper solo single £135. You can also get it as an upgrade as far as I know, but only on certain types of ticket. Eg not with an advance ticket I think.

Mystery solved I was using Paddington to St Erth, as you say with Penzance it shows 1 berth o_O No idea why, If it was a shared cabin I could understand - system does not allow different boarding or alighting to stop disturbing the 1st occupant.
UPDATE ignore my comments above - tried a dummy booking & reservation not possible, only other thing I can think of is the disabled accessible berth isn't booked and only stations / telesales can book it ?

It was stopped several years ago on Night Riv. but reappeared last year ? - most berths appear to be sold as Solo these days from nosing through train checking the configuration of cabins on recent trips.

You can share 2 berths in the same booking, I don’t think you can be assigned a berth with a stranger...

On my dummy booking it warns you may have to share with another traveller ( it only allowed booking when I selected female instead) I think the Scottish Sleepers no longer allow strangers sharing cabins though.

Have done the Penzance sleepers a few times in both directions. Mostly on all line rovers.
More so when it used to have 47s on the front.
Found out if I did the Plymouth portion I would get the class 08 shunter for haulage at Plymouth station.
Doesn't happen now though as the whole train goes to Penzance now.
Also,now its 57s I lost interest.
Saw 3 of the GWR 57s at Reading depot on Wednesday.
Sounds like the sleeping cars could do with a revamp.Ironing board beds are not pleasant

Not sure what you mean by Ironing board beds - unless you mean broadgage comments earlier which are tongue in cheek ??
