I just wanted to query something?

I've applied for a job with Arriva buses on the DB website. This website is home to other TOCs such as Northern to name but a few who are all part of the Deutsche Bahn family.

Does each TOC under DB have their own respective HR departments that deal with recruitment?

I've dipped four applications with Northern at the paper sift stage despite the best efforts with my CV and cover letter. From reading other threads on here, Northern can be an extremely difficult TOC to get in with and their selection procedure for prospective candidates is a little bit off the wall.

That said, I don't intend applying for anything further with Northern for a while, but I would like to know whether Arriva have their own recruitment people who are totally separate from Northern?

I just want to know if I am likely to hit the same brick wall again with my application?

Northern no different or harder than any other TOC. You can't expect success every time and 4 rejected applications isn't that bad after your long career policing. You have to get out of your mindset re negativity and persist and look to improve if you want success IMHO. I sent you a message offering help a few weeks back to no reply so....

I agree. It’s no ‘new thing’ that TOCs are often difficult to get in to. Persistence is key here. I’ve never applied for a job with Northern, but as far as I’m aware they’re no more “off the wall” in terms of recruitment than anybody else?....apart from maybe Virgin from what I’ve read here?

Incidentally, I work for Arriva buses currently and it's the most enjoyable and least stressful job I've ever had.

I put applications in for certain TOCs/FOCs (pretty much identical) and didn’t hear anything, but heard back straight away with others. It’s luck a lot of the time I think, with so many candidates. If you keep trying, eventually you’ll get there, which can be seen at this forum.

Times and posts like these I always remember this thread by @martin2345uk.

@C J Snarzell it’s hard to do and easy to say but just keep throwing your hat at whatever you can, including driver roles IMO.

Thanks for the updates

I'm not critising Northern too much as I am sure as an organisation they have to be very ruthless when it comes to the vetting of job candidates. I've just found it a little disappointing that I've not been able to get passed first base each time I have applied.

I'm giving Northern a break for now just to rethink about my future plans. I'm not saying I wouldn't apply for any further jobs with them, maybe next year if my circumstances haven't changed.

The whole point of this thread was to just find out if the Arriva group I have applied to have a separate HR from Northern even though they fall under the umbrella of the DB company. I'm just conscious of making an impression with a different team of people.

Thanks again for the updates on here which of course are all much appreciated!

Four rejected applications is not a lot. It took me about 30+. I have heard of someone who applied over 100 times to get a job.
No company is easy to get into but the easiest ones are the ones which tend to have the most vacancies.

You’re setting yourself up to fail if you don’t believe in yourself. Give it your best shot, that’s all you can do.

It took a total of 10 years for me to get a foot in with a TOC (XC) - I wasn’t applying constantly but whenever anything suitable arose. Persistence is key. Trust me.

As the old saying goes - “The best things come to those who wait”.... I never thought my day would come but it did.

I wish you well on your applications :)

What sort of Maths one is it? Numerical reasoning? Or is it at an assessment centre? I’m terrible with numerical reasoning too so feel your pain. If they just gave sums to work out I’d be okay, it’s the way they ask the question that gets me (the reasoning part I guess?). Any jobs I’ve applied for with these assessments I’ve ended up guessing my way through most questions.

No mot that far yet it's an online assessment for the conductor role in York and basically you have different graphs and itlle ask you question some are ok but then some are hard you have to work a percentage out ect which I cant do, the other part is easier you just read paragraphs get asked a question and the answers are yes no or not enough info to say
