I could've sworn I saw 401 out on Monday working with another unit into Edinburgh at about 0820.

Don't know of it was the very first one but certainly it's of the original "Express" batch of 170/4 units. Also, I thought the first 170s entered service in 1999 on Edinburgh-Glasgow?

402 was the first ScotRail unit to arrive in the country (as a two car) in 1999 with 401 following a couple of weeks later (as a four car with 402’s centre car).

Did they enter passenger serviceslike like than or were they reformed?

There have been a few operated as 2 cars over the years. Also a few mix-n-match sets using vehicles from two different units combined.

Presumably sets with a damaged vehicle and as with many units they use undamaged vehicles from different sets so that they aren't effectively down two units or so.

Don’t forget Porterbrook’s one off speculative 2 car 170399 which NatEx leased for a while.

Well a wee update 401 as of yesterday still at the headshunt. That's from mid may over a full month now. Not moved or even lights on you have 417 going up there most times but that goes in service is it the case the rail safety cert expired or is it the case it has been forgot about.
