As per the title, are there any unreserved coaches on the Paddington to Penzance HSTs? The one I am on from Exeter to Liskeard is rammed and I am a trifle concerned about coming back this afternoon. Didn’t reserve seats as I’m on a Cornwall & Devon Rover.

The GWR HSTs are now on local journeys so are fully unreserved.
I haven't worked out the unreserved coach on the 802s yet.
Summer weekend trains in Devon and Cornwall can be really busy

And the award for the most unhelpful post of the day goes to...

It’s clear the opening poster is talking about a London to Penzance service, so why not be a bit more helpful?
By the same token, it has been very widely reported that the “last HST to Paddington” has run (not just the railway press, either) so the original post could be said to be “dumb post of the day”.

Sorry  , don’t know what I’m on but it’s a long train! I have moved to coach D and see that the back end of it has a lot of green lights (although all seats occupied) so I will head for that one on my return.

Not everyone (member of this place or not) can keep up with every piece of news, nor be knowledgeable of every train type.

Lots of posters on here lack certain shall we say social skills, so try not to take it on the chin.

If it's a 5 or 10 car the composite coaches (D or J) are unreserved, if it's a 9 car I can't actually remember (embarrasing as I work them every day).
I've gotta say I still refer the padd services as HST's. A lot of the Penzance services are 9 cars now, just a couple of annoyingly timed 5 cars up in the morning.

Could even argue that as HST means High Speed Train and IETs are such that GWR still operate HSTs(!), what they don't operate now are InterCity 125s ;)

Which just goes to show that these new trains should all have had one common name for whoever operates them.

Isn't the generic name for them IETs - InterCity Express Trains - with the Nova and Azuma names being TOC-specific brands?

Nope, IET is what GWR decided to call them, although being as they came about from the Intercity Express Program it’s probably the closest to a common description. (Yes, I do appreciate that the 802s are an additional order and not as part of the IEP)

The 80X series are from the Hitachi AT300 family.

Exactly, especially seeing as they are looked after by the HSS Control team (High Speed & Sleeper)

Maybe that should be renamed, IES (Intercity Express & Sleeper) to reflect the new trains?

What about IEPs, which they were being called a while back?

So it kind of fits really!

G on a 9 car, I'm in there now :)

I have also found the unreserved coach on a 9-car IET to be coach G. A member of staff told me this when I enquired before boarding, based on a folding leaflet she had showing diagrams of the coaches on 9- and 10-car trains, e.g. which coaches are first class, which coaches are unreserved. She agreed with me that the coach order was still rather unpredictable on 10-car trains.

IEP is the program, from which the trains derived so I can see why people started calling them that :rolleyes: but,

You don’t go to the railway station to catch the 09.00 Program do you?:lol:

The Program now arriving at Platform 2 is the 10.30 program to London :lol:

Sounds rather silly when you put it in a sentence doesn’t it?

Not really, it's just like saying InterCity 125 instead of InterCity 125 train or Voyager against Voyager train. I don't see why using IEP which can be lengthened to InterCity Express Programme train (because that's what it is) is an issue in any way.

Nothing super about them tbh from what I gather. Not inherently bad trains but extremely underwhelming as InterCity trains go.
There is more than a hint of irony in the name. And there's an acronym there if you look!

The one I came back in (coach G in a 9-car train) had the aircon far too high considering most people only had lightweight clothing on as it was scorching outside. Don’t know why they do that.

Maybe the on-board staff can't adjust it?

To save fuel, money and the environment, I suspect....

That’s not very nice :p .
To be blunt, I'm struggling to see how someone who has posted over 3,600 times, including questions/comments about what is HST worked, is not aware that GWR don't run HSTs into Paddington any more.
