Until end July if new deal is rejected by ASLEF members. If deal accepted then it will last until deal is implemented. So how long is the new agreement for?
Just to update that this bridging agreement comes to an end this Sunday after ASLEF members have rejected by a large margin a proposed deal for Sundays in the working week. Unless a new temporary agreement is drawn up then it is likely to be back to driver shortages on Sundays in the west from 21st."Northern has advised that a bridging agreement has been reached with ASLEF over driver rest day working and that it expects to operate a normal Sunday
service this weekend. This will see the re-introduction of services on the following routes:
• Liverpool Lime Street – Wigan North Western
• Manchester Victoria – Wigan Wallgate via Atherton
• Manchester Piccadilly – Hazel Grove"
Source is a local rail user group e-mail. Anyone know more?
Obviously this thread is re Sunday shortages.
But just to clarify, the new deal has indeed been rejected today 65% to 35%, but this rejection wasn't just about Sundays in the working week.
Lots on the East must have voted against as well and they already have Sundays in the week. It was a wide ranging harmonisation deal with lots of proposed changes and drivers voted against it for lots of different reasons.
Our inherent fear of change (including myself on many occasions ) alongside a large number of long serving staff surely make such harmonisation deals extremely difficult to ever get voted through, as has been seen on numerous other TOCs & the old Northern.
What other business would put up with one region continuing to pretend to be two? It is a disgraceful waste of public money.Yep.
If Northern want to get Sundays in the working week on the west they should present a deal for that alone and not try to attach it to a full harmonisation across the 2 regions.
I don't understand why though. I mean, is there really a shortage of people who want the job? I know training takes aeons, but seriously? That's isn't to far off what happened with Southern over guards.
Drivers though, pretty safe

Just create new terms and conditions for new staff and let the old ones wither on the vine.No there’s not a shortage of people who wants the job but these new people who do come in the job will sign up to the union because they see the benefits and strengths it has and certainly won’t want to be contributory factors to the job potentially turning into horrible conditions that they may have just ran away from. And so it goes on
Just create new terms and conditions for new staff and let the old ones wither on the vine.
This has happened in other industries. Local Authorities, education, the NHS, all have been through that process (often known as Job Evaluation). In *all* of those industries, there was strife with the unions, there were some strikes, and plenty of staff chose the option of leaving. But, in the long run, the exercise was successful and new contracts were introduced. I fail to see why the railways should be a special case.Except as has been noted when this suggestion has been made before, the Unions vehemently object to differing contracts like that so it would almost certainly set off another round of industrial action.
This coming Sunday (28th) the Blackburn - Man Vic - Southport trains will be cancelled between Blackburn and Manchester. This means no trains at Smithy Bridge, Castleton, Mills Hill, or Moston even though Leeds - Manchester trains will pass through these stations without stopping. Although operated by the same Company, they are crewed from Leeds. Leeds trains have 10 or 11 minutes layover at Victoria. I don't know what the minimum agreed layover is but the Victoria - Preston stopper has just 5 minutes at Vic. On that basis, the Leeds- Manchester could at least serve the two busiest stations, Smithy Bridge and Mills Hill, or a different pair of stations every other hour. How about it, Northern? Do the Leeds and Manchester sides actually talk to each other?
Sounds like the intermediate stations are getting similar treatment as those on the Preston to Manchester line. When the Victoria services are all cancelled, Leyland, Adlington etc get no rail service as the other northern services make no additional calls. Welcome to the Sunday club!

And by making those extra calls it looks like Manchester to Burnley/Rose Grove/Accrington passengers who'd of been told to change at Hebden Bridge due to cancellation if direct train are now likely to miss their connection at Hebden meaning an hour wait.According to Journeycheck the Leeds - Victoria services will have additional calls tomorrow at Smithy Bridge, Castleton, Mills Hill and Moston

But they are not stopping. The screens at Littleborough and Smithy Bridge, as well as NRE, show the Leeds trains calling, but RTT shows them calling at Rochdale only. At Smithy Bridge today, a train called at 11.12 to Leeds; the driver told me he had a special stop order. Meanwhile 15 people were waiting for the 11.17 to Manchester, which shot through, horn blasting.According to Journeycheck the Leeds - Victoria services will have additional calls tomorrow at Smithy Bridge, Castleton, Mills Hill and Moston

I wouldn't believe Realtimetrains over all those other sources. But they are not stopping. RTT is the only source I have, along with the screens at Littleborough station just across the road.I wouldn't believe Realtimetrains over all those other sources.
