Hi,

Wasn’t quite sure where to post this one, but I thought this section as better place as any but if wrong Mods please feel free to move.

Planning to use a Cheshire Day Ranger shortly, probably on a weekday, and wanted to know where the 319s are likely to be found these days.

I’ve seen them at Liverpool Lime Street in the past but seem to remember they go out towards Preston? so maybe this ones not the best ticket for this one unless any go out towards Manchester?

I see them mentioned on RTT as the timing load so not sure if that’s accurate.

Any advice welcome.

Thanks!

Saperstein.

Nearly all Northern services from Liverpool Lime Street to Blackpool North via Preston and to Wigan North Western are class 319. The exceptions to this are if a DMU is substituted, or the 1945 on Saturdays which is diagrammed a 323.

Towards Crewe via Manchester Airport, or Warrington Bank Quay, there is a mixture of 319s and 323s - I think it is around an even split, with perhaps slightly more of the former, again unless you are unlucky and a DMU is substituting.

The standard Mon/Fri turnout is as follows.
5 units Crewe-(Manchester Airport)-Liverpool Lime Street-Warrington Bank Quay-Liverpool Lime Street-(Manchester Airport)-Crewe-Manchester Piccadilly-Crewe. Takes ten hours for the complete circuit, five 323s in use as well.
Additional unit in use AM/PM peaks, timetable slightly changed, including journeys Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Victoria.
5 units Hazel Grove-Blackpool North (hourly service).
4 units Manchester Airport-Blackpool North (hourly service).
4 units Liverpool Lime Street-Wigan (half-hourly service).
3 units Liverpool Lime Street-Blackpool North (hourly service).
2 units Manchester Victoria-Preston (hourly service).
As you'll see, the standard turnout is of 24 units, out of the 27 currently available for use by Northern.

So you can't very well go wrong at such as Manchester Piccadilly, five/six departures per hour, on average, and if you wait long enough you'll see 15 of the 24 units out. Preston seven departures per hour, you'll eventually see 14 units, Liverpool Lime Street four departures per hour, you'll see 13 units.

Of the places mentioned, a Cheshire Day Ranger would be valid to/from Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street. I presume you're starting from somewhere in Cheshire, otherwise a Lancashire Day Ranger would be more appropriate.

Saturdays are the same, except that the additional unit doesn't come out. Sundays there's not quite so many out.

As mentioned in another thread, since May some Wigan turns are mixed in with the Liverpool/Crewe/Manchester/Warrington circuit, affecting only the 319 diagrams. For example, the 1016 Crewe - Lime Street forms the 1245 Lime Street - Wigan NW and the 1411 Warrington BQ - Lime Street forms the 1515 Lime Street - Wigan NW.

The overall numbers are still correct, though: 9 off-peak 319 diagrams working a combination of Manchester - Crewe and Liverpool - Crewe/Warrington/Wigan, then an additional peak one which does Manchester Victoria - Liverpool Lime Street.

It's also worth noting that DMU substitutions for 319s are not at all uncommon. A particular favourite seems to be the diagram that does the 1528 Lime Street - Crewe. Fairly common to see a 156 subbing on this working.

Well, yeah, I see your location is given as Chester, and your pic shows a Chester station sign. I'm good at that, not reading people's posts properly.

Thanks for the quick and informative replies.

Sorry @Bovverboy I should have made clear my starting point in my opening post, but see you worked it out from my Avatar ;)

Planning to go via Merseyrail to Liverpool, across to Manchester and around that area for a bit, possibly a 323 up-to Glossop/Hadfield then come back via Warrington / Crewe.
