Northern 323s refurbishment and cascade

323229 has worked 1217 Crewe - Liverpool Lime Street and 1445 Liverpool Lime Street - Wigan North Western this afternoon. Next working will be 1551 Wigan North Western - Liverpool Lime Street.
First time I've seen a 323 set on this diagram.

Seems to be the new routine, I've checked back as far as last Friday and things have been the same every day since then. After the Wigan it does 1700 Warrington Bank Quay.

That’s been the case since the May TT change.

For some services the circuit at Lime Street is - Crewe-Liverpool, Liverpool-Wigan, Wigan-Liverpool, Liverpool-Warrington, Warrington-Liverpool. Or Crewe-Liverpool, Liverpool-Warrington, Warrington-Liverpool, Liverpool-Wigan, Wigan-Liverpool. This only happens if the train is booked a 319.

Ah, so the situation is that yesterday a 323 worked what is nominally a 319 duty. The last I heard, that couldn't happen, Victoria crews weren't trained on 323s, and, as the latter constituted 50% of the parc on the Crewe circuit, that soaked up all the Lime Street crews. It's good to see times are changing.

Yep spot on, it’s booked a 319!

Thankfully yesterday, all the services involved the Oxford Road-Lime Street bit, Lime Street-Wigan and return are all Lime Street crew thankfully!

Gets complicated on the Wigan line sometimes - with Wigan, Blackpool Crew and Man Vic guards working on there too! Hence why 323’s don’t have much work on there apart from that Saturday turn!

Now that the 323s have lost the morning Alderley Edge peak duty to DMUs, potentially this diagram could switch to 323s permanently.

I'm not sure, but the ECS to form this service switched to Newton Heath from July. I know it was mentioned in another thread but no definitive reason was given.

As mentioned previously, it could fit in with PRM work for the 323s which is expected to start soon.

They are! Re the above!

The next work after the 1445 Wigan is the 1700 Warrington then 1914 Liverpool-Wigan and 2021 return.

Now the 323 wouldn’t have done the 1914 as the return 2021 Wigan-Liverpool is a Wigan Driver, so don’t sign 323’s. So I assume you’re saying it was swapped onto the 1945 Wigan - @prod_pep ? Which would be fine as it’s Liverpool crew out and back.

And yes there officially should be one less 323 diagram (the Alderley Edge one) to account for a 323 away for PRM.

Yes. Booked or not, the 1945 is what it worked. A 319 is back on it today, although there was a swap after the 1217 Crewe - Lime Street due to a late running Blackpool.

323s regularly overnight at Allerton. 323236 was noted on the 0630 Lime Street to Crewe on Tuesday morning.

06:30 ,is booked a 323 since the May TT change - previously booked a 319.

Two other 323s which stable overnight at Allerton are the ones which do
1) 0616 Crewe-Liverpool stopper (runs ECS, reversing at Liverpool South Parkway);
2) 0724 Stockport-Macclesfield (runs ECS via Lime Street and Chat Moss).

For quite a few months prior to the May changes, the morning Alderley Edge to Piccadilly was supplied from Allerton (ran ECS via Lime Street, Chat Moss, & Styal).

So far as I know all the heavy 323 exams are now done at Allerton rather than Longsight.

If you go through Manchester on the train now you can't miss it - it's recently been resurfaced to have bright yellow tactile flooring.

The last Glossop service runs ECS to stable there overnight, along with the stock off the 16:57 Stoke to Picc, and the 23:10 Wilmslow to Picc. The stock then runs ECS back to Hadfield to form the first service off there in the morning, and also goes to form the 05:52 from Picc to Hadfield,

According to RTT, four 323s stable at the Excursion Platform. M/F they depart as two doubles, the first drops the unit for the 0532 Hadfield at Picc then continues ECS to Hadfield. The second also splits at Picc, to form the 0624 Hadfield and 0647 Hadfield/Glossop.
In addition to the units listed by _toommm_ another one returning at night is the unit off 5K84, 2349 Alderley Edge to Picc ECS, which couples at Picc to the ex-Glossop.
On Saturdays only one double departs, this drops the unit for the 0559 Hadfield at Picc and continues ECS to Hadfield. The other two units presumably remain at Longsight throughout Saturday, and there are no departures at all on Sundays.

(BIB) Sorry, that's not correct, the unit which forms the 0552 Picc-Hadfield (NSSu) comes from Stockport CMD.

Diagrammed for a four-car set, I believe (the one occasion I saw it, it was 142+150), and after doing Newton Heath to Alderley Edge ECS, and Alderley Edge to Piccadilly in service, it goes to Stockport CMD, where, according to RTT, it remains until the following morning before being used again.
Yet Northern are short-forming DMU sets, in the afternoon peak, every day of the week. Am I missing something?

Northern sill have PRM work and the refurbishment work to do with their older units which kinda explain the sort forming of DMU's they have and I also think the fact that there are no 331s running on the west side yet doesn't cut it either so for the time being Northern has to postpone sending the 323s off for refurbishment and also they have to make do with the units they don't already have in refurbishment. I might be wrong but that maybe some of the reasons why short forming is happening within Northern, and probably also why the 323s haven't gone for PRM mods/refurbishment yet.

That doesn't explain why a four-car DMU stands idle for most of the day.

I don't know much about why Northern does that but it seems pointless to do it. Only reason I can think of is that they aren't timetabled/ allocated to go out or timetabled to go put later on in the day
