The work required for HS2 from spoil removal, to ballasting, track laying, wiring etc is so much the big four won't be able to cover the work. Likely every FOC will be able to win work.

I would think DB will be able to handle the HS2 work on their own now they are losing the Mendip stone work. It also fits in nicely with where they will have surplus drivers (Acton) and the the surplus of heavy haul locomotion they will have after November. It would be a fair bet to assume DB will be very aggressive when bidding for HS2 work. Considering work has already started at the station sites on the route it cannot be too long before its shovels in the ground on the line itself. Govt permitting of course!

No FOC can single handidly take on the entire work. DB losing the mendips whilst it's a large contract DB have already stated resources are allocated to other commercial work.

I would be interested to know what the expected traffic levels will be for HS2 work. I know the tunnelling out to OOC will generate considerable tonnages of spoil (Croft Quarry was mentioned as taking up to 20m tonnes of HS2 spoil) and there could be comparisons with the traffic levels generated by other High speed construction in Europe. I would venture that FL would struggle to handle much more work considering the resourcing issues they will face with the Mendips and Gbrf's ongoing march to world domination must at some point put a strain on their resources.Db would appear to be in a prime position for HS2 even if it is partially shared with the others.

Can I please ask what the main routes of HS2 freight will be during the construction period?

I'm assuming trains will be constantly moving back and forth all day? I'd like to see some 60's doing the rounds.

Thanks.

Midland mainline perhaps?
Turn left just south of Leicester & Croft quarry is on the right.
Or up the West Coast mainline, left at Nuneaton & a run round at Whitacre junction. That way just a reversal into the quarry sidings will be needed.

there will be all kinds of routes used to move the muck about. i suspect there will be more than one disposal location.

There are also all of the infrastructure materials services to consider.

In RAIL tey are talking about up to 18 trains per day into and out of Willesden which will be the main hub for HS2 construction in that area. Spoil trains will form part of this. We mut assume that post if not all of these trains will find their way onto the MML as the WCML would seem to be full. The additional track going onto the MML north of Bedford should help and routing via Corby and Manton avoid any bottlenecks from Glendon onwards. Whether you can fit 18 trains per day this way remains to be seen.

Interesting times ahead.

The four DCR Class 60s are all at Toton being 'supersixtyed' at the moment, presumably things must be going well as GBRf 60096 yesterday moved from Doncaster to Willesden and on to Chaddesden today, 096 will be used for DCR training while 028, 038, 046 & 055 are readied for service

Thanks for that info, what’s the role of Maltby colliery now? Is it purely wagon storage.

As I understand it the former colliery site is now owned by Hargreaves Land who are planning to make parts of it available for various commercial purposes, it seems that all or part of the rail infrastructure is still present so I assume that the arrival of these box wagons may well be for the start of land clearance prior to construction, perhaps this could be down to the Cappagh ownership of DCR

60096 out and about again yesterday on light engine training runs from Willesden to Angerstein Wharf, the reported reason being for a new traffic flow to be operated by DCR

I think I remember seeing something about Cappagh setting up a site at Angerstein Wharf for waste transfer. Do you have any idea when the new flow is due to start?

i would expect so, turn off at cricklewood down dudding hill.

I'm not sure how the Croft Quarry thing stands, Aggregate Industries applied last year for permission to extend the quarry in order to release another 6m tonnes of aggregate over 20 years, knowing nothing about quarrying I'm unsure whether they could quarry and infill at the same time

One good thing is that their application stated there would be no increase in the number of lorries using the site

No knowledge I'm afraid, hopefully it will be permanent thing although it could well be another short term flow such as the Westbury to Southampton one from a couple of weeks ago, if 096 is being used for route learning/refreshing then whatever is going to happen will presumably be sooner rather than later

A bit of googling reveals that what I remember seeing was the waste "hub" opened recently, connected to the Angerstein branch, operated by Norris Waste Management. But everything I can find about that refers to a partnership with GBRf, nothing about DCR. I think this may be where GBRf already operate a flow to Scunthorpe Roxby Gullet from?

Thanks for the clip BRX, it's 18 or 19 years since I signed that route but it's immediately recognisable

Didn't realise Colas got shot of their tugs? You can see that it's been partially de-branded from Colas Rail Freight. Will this be repainted into DCR livery?
Yep - Colas sold them off to Beacon Rail Leasing, who now lease them to GBRf. 60096 here is subleased from GBRf to DCR for these initial workings - quite a bit to get your head around!
As a result, this one won't be repainted into DCR colours.

I wonder what the DCR colours will actually be when the first of the four 60s appears, will they carry on with the grey that the 56s are in or will it be corporate Cappagh blue and white?

Thanks for the reply! Definitely a head spinner!! I thought DCR livery was a dark hedgeleaf green?

You obviously blinked :D Most of the old DCR locos have moved on now with just 56091 & 56103 remaining and in the current grey, I think 56303 is still around in green but was damaged a while back and is out of use pending repair/scrapping

Thanks, had a look at that. Will add it to my collection of on-train videos passing my location!
