Local travel news this morning referred to an earlier derailment causing delays to Reigate - Gatwick and Redhill - Tonbridge services.
At the moment (08:00) there is a GWR unit stationary on the Tonbridge line south of Redhill (which is highly unusual), with a Southern unit at a stand beyond it. These are either on the up running line, or possibly on the adjacent siding. The down Tonbridge line is evidently clear, as a Southern service has just departed that way.
Does anyone have more info' on what happened, and particularly how a GWR unit apparently ended up heading towards Tonbridge?

5O90 (GWR ECS) derailed going into the Redhill Loco Sidings (which, if my memory serves me correctly, is on the Up Tonbridge), delays were caused as the derailed unit was accentuating the track circuits in the station throat.

Thanks for the explanation, I presume that must mean GWR stable one or more units at Redhill overnight? I'd always assumed they returned to Reading for the night, but I suppose that would involve a lot of ECS mileage.

Normally two turbos stable every night at Redhill off 2235 & 2334 Reading - Gatwick for 0510 Gatwick - Reading & 0619 Redhill - Reading

One very lucky Reading driver gets that job, works the last and first Reading back, if I remember the job correctly.

Ah, thanks, that makes sense, I'd never really thought about where they might be out-stationed.

Just to update what i said earlier, I think the Southern unit might be on a siding rather than the running line. And the GWR unit has evidently been split, it's only two coaches with a corridor connection visible at the north end, so the northern end driving car has gone elsewhere.

I shall keep an eye open for developments, no sign of activity around it at the moment, though the trees get rather in the way of my view.

Assuming that they're not given anything to do between the arrival of their train at Redhill and then the departure some hours later those drivers must know all the best places to have a kip on a Turbo then!

some thing coming out the loco trap points could cause this

you used to be able to leave redhill up side via the up road to the crossover at earlswood via dummy[shunt signal ]movements then cross over at the oil siding crossover to the down road but that was 25+ years ago

its probably very different now.??

With HG track circuit being occupied you can’t normalise 1944 points to be able to use that route or ever could in this situation.

Seems to be being cleared up now (09:40), orange suited personnel in attendance and the GWR coaches have been moved further into the yard. Can't tell whether there is any track repair work in progress, too far away and trees in the way.

There are Great Western conductors at Redhill however the workings that start and finish at Redhill overnight are worked by Southern Redhill drivers.

Not anymore - Since the May TT change the two “Southern” diagrams work (amongst other bits) the 0619 Redhill - Reading (2V47); and the 2234 Reading - Gatwick (2O88). Dren is correct that the last one over and first back is now a Reading night turn.

Indeed. Previously GWR drivers based at Reading would have been taxied back to Reading, however as you and Dren say this is now a night turn. And yes, some of the driver's happen to know where the best bit to kip on a Turbo is. My choice would easily be the ex / non ex FC end.

What happened?...

I assume this is at Redhill (there is no context!). If so, there was a depot derailment.
That single coach is standing at the north end of platform 1 at Redhill (which is a dead end since platform 0 opened) so it must indeed have been the missing coach from the derailed set.

So, the GWR drivers sleep on the train in the sidings at night, or are they allowed off site to visit probably the only thing open at Redhill which is a 24hour McD?

They’re diagrammed to immobilise the set they bring in at 01something; take a break (which should be done at an “official” break point ie the mess room), then mobilise the set and work the first one off Gatwick in the morning. They’re definitely not diagrammed to sleep anywhere; although as long as they can bet gotten hold of what they do on and where they spend their break is generally their business.

It’s way off topic to discuss any further though.
