Most large operators seem to advertise the threat of them appearing, but I've never actually seen any, even on my trips to London.
Wow, never heard that one. Any instances you know of?If the inspector finds a serious irregularity they can suspend the driver there and then and take over driving the bus.

I personally hate those guys. I remember my coach breaking down at Pool Meadow my passengers were collected. With a National Express depot across the road i was told i had to wait for a Scania recovery. Off i decided to go the other side of town they came on board and had the cheek to ask for my ID even though i was in National Express uniform. I thought they were joking after much arguing i showed them my id and their answer we thought you were an impostor. They've always been a thing in the West Midlands, used to get big gangs of them checking entire buses quickly while they stood at the stop, often with police backup. A quick Google shows numerous 'Angry People In Local Newspaper' style complaints about them so I assume they're still about.
And would they leave the driver behind at the stop they got on at to carry out the inspection in the first place? If the inspector finds a serious irregularity they can suspend the driver there and then and take over driving the bus.

Happened yesterday on the bus I was travelling on into Wolverhampton. One inspector checked upper floor, another the lower floor, while bus held at the stop. Several other inspectors standing there. They've always been a thing in the West Midlands, used to get big gangs of them checking entire buses quickly while they stood at the stop, often with police backup.
