National Routeing Guide update

I think so; the routeing guide says (highlighting by me)
In other words you need to use one of the routes on the final map; if you just transition at the destination that requirement is not satisfied.

OK, thanks. In terms of search, I'm used to thinking of inter-map links as equivalent to in-map links ( except they're one-way only, of course ) but what you say makes sense.

Some map sequences were changed this afternoon.
Changes from 19 Jun 2019 (262) to 26 Jun 2019 (263).

Permitted Route changes:
Cardiff Central (CDF) to Liverpool Group (G18) gain AW+JO+CV
This journey now has mapped routes which go via Chester and Runcorn.

Coventry (COV) to Warrington Group (G31) gain NV+LC
This journey now has mapped routes using the direct line between Crewe and Warrington again.

If I compare today's routeing guide with the one from 7 June instead of 19 June, then it works out as follows:

This journey no longer has mapped routes:
via Birmingham International and the the direct Crewe-Warrington line; or
via Wilmslow and the the direct Crewe-Warrington line.
It now has mapped routes which go via both Bedworth and Birmingham.

Losing Coventry-Wolverhampton-Stafford-Crewe-Warrington would be a nuisance, but it's not much further than the shortest route for Coventry-Warrington stations, and I don't know if there's a journey which uses this points but where this wouldn't be permitted by ticket sites' implementations of the shortest route rule.

Ely (ELY) to Huyton (HUY) gain ER+ED+DW+JG
This journey now has mapped routes via Meadowhall.

Coventry Arena to Warrington Bank Quay? That's over 6 miles longer via Birmingham than the shortest route via the Trent Valley line, and often the fastest journey, but from what you're saying, sounds like it's still not permitted after this afternoon's changes?

I really don't know what they're playing at with these changes. It's been a longstanding policy that, when travelling along the central section of the WCML you could always travel along any of the "branches" or main lines loops as long as you didn't go further away from your destination, e.g. if your origin was Tamworth and your destination Preston you could go via Birmingham but not down to Nuneaton and then Coventry. But now suddenly this is no longer good enough. Madness, utter madness.

Looks like TfW are being a bit more proactive with routeing their yet-to-be-introduced Cardiff-Liverpool service than they were with the Wrexham/Chester-Liverpool portion.

and Wrexham - Liverpool is still not permitted via the Halton curve.
Is it not? National Rail shows me trains every hour for WRX-LIV via Helsby, with a single £9.20 Off-Peak Day Return ticket offered.

Without the 'via' it shows services via Birkenhead instead, as they're six minutes faster than waiting for the Halton curve service.

That's because that particular ticket is 'via Runcorn', so it obviously must be valid on that route.

Anything else, such as tickets to Central, which only have 'any permitted', are not valid.
(shortest route is, apparently, via Merseyrail)

Well, that's something fixed that should always have been the case. I wonder what broke that?

There are still serious problems here though, at least in part due to the fact that Ely -> Liverpool -> Huyton, while by far the most obvious not-London route, is still not allowed. Eg. searching on NRE for Ely -> Huyton, leaving today, returning tomorrow, via Sheffield, offers me *no* available return ticket for any journey starting between 1316 and 1616. There are five 'no tickets available' results in that gap, three Ely -> Liverpool -> Huyton (so not permitted under the irritating current routing rules), and two bizarre ones each with 5 changes (one involving going Stockport->Crewe (!) and the other involving Sheffield->Tamworth (!), presumably neither of which are permitted routing either...)

Because of the Merseyrail fares quirk (no CDR) that one indeed isn't. The Anytime at £12.something is however de-facto valid that way because it is more expensive than via Runcorn.

Good thinking but there's two problems:
  1. The VIA RUNCORN fares are issued specifically to Lime Street only, not the LIVERPOOL STATIONS group, preventing them from being used onwards to Liverpool Central. (Edited to add: This means they are not available for a Wrexham to Liverpool Central journey and their validity over the route can't be taken into account to make an Any Permitted fare valid.)
  2. The rule about validity over non-permitted routes where there is a cheaper routed fare only applies to fares routed Any Permitted, not blank/route "." fares. It stands to reason that it should, although I'm not aware of any edict from RDG to journey planner suppliers to tell them to change their algorithms to work in this way...

I wasn't aware of any rule, just a de-facto situation based on the fact that (a) you are entitled to a route excess between any non-TOC-specific routes for a given journey, (b) that route excess would be zero fare, and (c) nobody likes issuing zero-fare route excesses so hardly any get issued. Was there a rule to make planners work with it?

Or does them being issued to Lime St remove the right to a route excess?

(There are I believe some silly ones of this nature, such as route NOT LONDON fares that are de-facto valid via London, though obviously with no Tube transfer included - and almost all +LONDON routed fares are de-facto valid via non-London routes for a similar reason, though most of these ones are +ANY PERMITTED or just + these days anyway)

This has always been fairly clear in the routeing guide. And on reading it again just now, I see that my 2nd point above is wrong! It says (in the main instructions):
You may only use all the permitted routes if the fare is unrouted or the route is described as "any permitted". An "any permitted" ticket cannot be used for travel on a route not listed in the Routeing Guide for which a higher priced route specific fare exists. It can be used on any route not listed in the Routeing Guide for which a lower priced route specific fare exists.

The 2nd bit in bold is the contractual basis for your point. Some journey planners implement a specific rule for the bolded bit, but not all do. But I think it is irrelevant because a "lower priced route specific fare" does not exist for Wrexham to Liverpool Central; the fare is only available for Wrexham to Liverpool Lime Street.

The 1st bit in bold proves my second point invalid, as it clearly also applies to blank or "dot" routes.

To be horribly pedantic (and to illustrate the silliness!) the fare is only available for Wrexham General to Liverpool Lime Street - it is not even available for Wrexham Central to Liverpool Lime Street.

This is why we could really do with a recursive fares and routeing system, which if you inserted it for any part of a journey it could be used for any journey of which that is a component.

This adds the rest of the EMT advance tickets to London.

700810 (Doubleback) On Sundays passengers travelling from rRedditch, Alvechurch and Barnt Green to Bromsgrove, Droitwich Spa, Worcester Foregate Street and Worcester Shrub Hill may doubleback by changing at Longbridge. This doubleback easement applies in both directions
No effect.

Some more changes were published this afternoon.
Changes from 03 Jul 2019 (264) to 10 Jul 2019 (265).

Permitted Route changes:
Dorking Group (G10) to Horsham (HRH) gain CS+LF
This journey now has mapped routes via Gatwick.

Easement changes:

Added:
700863 (Doubleback) Customers travelling from or via Stafford to Northampton may interchange at Milton Keynes Central and doubleback through Wolverton. This doubleback easement applies in both directions.
This easement is a more generic version of 700438 (which does the same thing, but only for "any permitted" tickets).

I'm not sure how wise it is to specify Stafford here, when (say) the fastest Manchester-Northampton journeys involve a change in Milton Keynes, but doesn't use a train which goes through Stafford.

700864 (Routeing Point) Customers travelling from Alsager or Kidsgrove to stations beyond Charlton or Blackheath may travel via Stoke on Trent. This routeing point easement will override unintended consequences of NFM64 fares checking in journey planners and will work in both directions.
For some reason, the NFM64 fare for (for example) Alsager-Sidcup is higher than the fares to Sidcup from Cheadle Hulme, Stoke-on-Trent and Crewe. You'd have to go to Sidcup via Charlton or Blackheath to take advantage of this easement, of course.

700865 (Routeing Point) Customers travelling from Bruton or Frome to Taunton may travel via Westbury. This routeing point easement will apply in both directions.

700866 (Local) Customers travelling to Taunton via Westbury from Bruton or Frome may doubleback through those stations after interchanging at Westbury. This local easement will apply in both directions.
These help with the fact that Bruton and Frome have quite an infrequent timetable towards Castle Cary. For Bruton, this means there's a train in some of the gaps. For Frome, there are extra trains which start there.

700867 (Doubleback) Customers travelling from Kirkhill, Burnside, Croftfoot, Kings Park, Mount Florida, or via Mount Florida from origins on the Neilston branch to Uddingston or Bellshill, may doubleback through Newton (Lanarkshire) after interchanging at Cambuslang. This doubleback easement applies in both directions.
I think the route being considered here is (wherever-) Kirkhill-Newton-Cambuslang-Uddingston (-Bellshill). As there are usually no direct Newton-Uddingston trains, this is the shortest route, and so a journey on this route should be permitted without any easements.

This easement is intended to affect the Newton-Cambuslang-Uddingston section. The journey may be between two stations with a common routeing point (for Kirkhill and Uddingston this would be Newton), or it may the section of a longer journey which goes between a routeing point (Newton) and a station associated with it. This may mean that a "doubleback" easement may not have the intended effect.

Perhaps it all works fine though - the web sites I tried hadn't implemented these changes when I tried them, so I haven't checked this easement yet.

I see a recent thread I posted has resulted in positive changes. Maybe I thank the people who did that. I don't know who they are but I'm sure they do.

Which you can’t, because you’d violate easement 44.

Some easement changes have been made over the last week. Sorry about the delay.

On Friday, the following changes were published:

Changes from 10 Jul 2019 (265) to 19 Jul 2019 (266).

Easement changes:

Removed:
030155 (Doubleback) Shipley to Runcorn, double back via Liverpool Lime Street.
Easement 30186 permits a double back to Liverpool Lime Street if you're going via Warrington Central. If you're going via St Helens Junction instead, the "group station" rule lets you double back through Edge Hill. If I've guessed the missing words correctly, this easement had no effect.

Added:
700868 (Map) Due to engineering closures between Bristol and Cheltenham Spa, Cross Country services will be diverted via Bath Spa and Swindon on 26 and 27 October 2019. This map easement will apply in both directions.
The timetable doesn't show the diverted services yet, but web sites do show a through ticket as being valid that way using other trains.

Changed:
700438 (Doubleback) Customers travelling from Northampton to or via Stafford or via Stone in possession of tickets routed "Any Permitted may double back via Milton Keynes. This easement applies in both directions.
700863 (Doubleback) Customers travelling from or via Stafford. Or via Stone, to Northampton may interchange at Milton Keynes Central and doubleback through Wolverton. This doubleback easement applies in both directions.
"Stone" refers here to the town rather than the railway station (which only has platforms on the lines to and from Stafford). This change means that you can now book Stoke-Northampton advance tickets via Milton Keynes.

700867 (Doubleback)(Local) Customers travelling from Kirkhill, Burnside, Croftfoot, Kings Park, Mount Florida, or via Mount Florida from origins on the Neilston branch to Uddingston or Bellshill, may doubleback through Newton (Lanarkshire) after interchanging at Cambuslang. This doubleback local easement applies in both directions.
On nre.co.uk, this seems to mean that it will give you itineraries via the shortest route from Mount Florida to Uddingston, but not from Muirend. I don't know if this change has affected this.

The following changes were published yesterday:

Changes from 19 Jul 2019 (266) to 24 Jul 2019 (267).

Easement changes:

Removed:
700309 (Circuitous Route) Customers travelling via Reading to Thatcham may not travel via Newbury. This easement applies in both directions.
The shortest route from Reading to Thatcham isn't via Newbury, so this easement may only have prevented journeys which started with Thatcham-Newbury-Westbury-Swindon-Reading or something like that.

Added:

700869 (Circuitous Route) Customers travelling from Warrington Central or Warrington Bank Quay to Brunswick may not travel via Edgehill or Liverpool Lime Street. This circuitous route easement applies in both directions.
This seems like quite a slow route to take when so many trains call at Liverpool South Parkway. There are similar tickets which are dearer, and ones which have inconvenient route restrictions, so perhaps someone was using this ticket in place of one of those.

Changed:
700847 (Fare route) Tickets to London Terminals priced on routes (00131) PLUS HS1 and (00324) Plus HS1 NOT UND(erground) via Ebbsfleet International on HS1 services to London are valid via London St Pancras International and Farringdon by National Rail services to City Thameslink, London Bridge, London Blackfriars, London Cannon Street, London Waterloo East and London Charing Cross. This fare route easement applies in both directions.
This easement now covers journeys from Ebbsfleet and Stratford. I think "on HS1 services to London" just means your route has to involve HS1 at some point.

Some more changes were published this afternoon.
Changes from 24 Jul 2019 (267) to 31 Jul 2019 (268).

Permitted Route changes:
Aberdeen (ABD) to Sleaford (SLR) gain GS+KS lose GS+DL
Dundee (DEE) to Sleaford (SLR) gain GS+KS lose GS+DL
Edinburgh Group (G11) to Sleaford (SLR) gain GS+KS lose GS+DL
Inverkeithing Group (G50) to Sleaford (SLR) gain GS+KS lose GS+DL
Kirkcaldy Group (G51) to Sleaford (SLR) gain GS+KS lose GS+DL
Ladybank (LDY) to Sleaford (SLR) gain GS+KS lose GS+DL
Newcastle (NCL) to Sleaford (SLR) gain GS+KS lose GS+DL
Perth (PTH) to Sleaford (SLR) gain GS+KS KI+GS+KS lose GS+DL KI+GS+DL
No effect.

Looking at it, all the last map in those sequences can be used for is the Grantham-Sleaford link, whichever one it is.

There are another 16 map stations from where a valid map sequence to Sleaford could end with GS+DL, including Carlisle-Sleaford with GP+NP+GS+DL. Whatever this is, it doesn't seem to be an attempt to eliminate GS+DL from sequences.

Carlisle (CAR) to Chester (CTR) gain GP+JP+BV+JO
This journey now has mapped routes which go via Runcorn.

Carlisle (CAR) to Sleaford (SLR) gain GN+GT+GH GN+GT+KS lose GN+AT HX+GS
This journey no longer has mapped routes:
via Edinburgh;
via both Newcastle and Peterborough; or
via Newcastle, Lincoln and Grantham.
It now has mapped routes via Goole.

Glasgow Group (G13) to Newcastle (NCL) lose MG+MN
This journey no longer has mapped routes via Manchester.

Easement changes:

Removed:
700161 (Circuitous Route) Customers travelling from Dunbar to Newcastle and beyond in possession of tickets routed 'DIRECT' may not travel via Edinburgh. This easement applies in both directions.
There are, as far as I know, no tickets left which are routed 'DIRECT', so this had no effect. Nor do easements 40009, 700100, 700154, 700157, 700215, 700463 or 700501, for the same reason.

700397 (Circuitous Route) Customers travelling from Carlisle and Lockerbie to Newcastle, Chester Le Street, Durham, Darlington, Middlesbrough, Thornaby,Yarm, Northallerton and Thirsk in possession of tickets routed "Any Permitted" may not travel via Manchester Stations. This easement applies in both directions.
Ignoring easements, none of these journeys have had a mapped route via Manchester since 2014.

700399 (Circuitous Route) Customers travelling from Glasgow Central or Glasgow Queen Street to Newcastle in possession of tickets routed "Any Permitted" may not travel via Manchester Stations. This easement applies in both directions.
No longer needed. See above.

Added:

700870 (Routeing Point) Customers on journeys from or via Glasgow Central to Cramlington or Morpeth may travel via Carlisle, Hexham and Newcastle on the direct Northern service between Carlisle and Morpeth. This routeing point easement will override NFM64 fares checking and applies in both directions.
Newcastle fails the fare check for a Glasgow-Cramlington or Glasgow-Morpeth journey, at least.

It does seem a bit unfortunate to restrict this easement to trains between Carlisle and Morpeth, as there aren't that many of them, they either start early or finish late, depending on the direction of travel, and they don't go that way at all on Sundays.

There is no mechanism to specify this; I wouldn't take the text too literally!

The easement allows Newcastle to be used as the destination routeing point for a Glasgow to Morpeth journey (and vice-versa).

Thanks for that. I wasn't sure if there was some way to list specific trains with this, in the way they do with off peak ticket restrictions.

There are things they could do to make this work more like the text says, though. My feeling is that anything on those lines would just make things less predictable for passengers. When you're charging people a premium to use a slower route (for Glasgow-Morpeth, at least), that's not a good thing.

No worries.

For a Routeing Point easement then the relevant routeing point is effectively deemed to be an appropriate origin/destination Routeing point (ORP/DRP), in the same way as if that location had passed the fares check rule.

via Guide Bridge; or
via Selby.
It now has mapped routes:
via both Leeds and Brighouse; and
via both Pontefract and Dewsbury.

Birmingham Group (G02) to Huddersfield Group (G40) gain CE+WY RO+CM+YN lose BM+TP BP+TM+TP XL+WY
This journey no longer has mapped routes:
via Goole;
via Guide Bridge;
via Halifax or Sowerby Bridge;
via Selby;
via both Nuneaton and Leeds;
via Rotherham, Doncaster and Sherburn-in-Elmet;
via the direct route between Doncaster and Pontefract Monkhill; or
ones via Doncaster and Church Fenton which don't go through Barnsley.

Bolton (BON) to Lichfield Trent Valley (LTV) gain NW lose NR+BM+WM NR+TM TM
This journey no longer has mapped routes via both Warrington and Birmingham.
It now has mapped routes via Wigan.

Bolton (BON) to Rugeley Trent Valley (RGL) gain NW lose NR+BM+WM NR+TM+WM TM+WM
This journey no longer has mapped routes via Warrington and Wolverhampton.
It now has mapped routes using the line between Stafford and Rugeley, including the shortest Bolton-Rugeley route.

Map changes:
GV: Gain Liverpool Group to/from Wigan Group
This map is used in 962 routes.
This map already had Liverpool-Huyton and Huyton-Wigan links.

There are some journeys which are now valid via Liverpool, some now valid via Wigan, and some which have a wider choice of routes between them. No journey has had a sequence with GV in it added or removed since October, so I don't know what may have motivated this.

Easement changes:

Changed:

700810 (Doubleback) On Sundays passengers Customers travelling from Redditch, Alvechurch and Barnt Green to Bromsgrove, Droitwich Spa, Worcester Foregate Street and Worcester Shrub Hill may doubleback by changing at Longbridge. This doubleback easement applies in both directions
There are longer distance trains throughout the week which stop at Longbridge but not at Barnt Green, so this makes the "not via University/Birmingham" tickets more useful.

Journeys from Redditch and Alvechurch on "any permitted" tickets (among others) also benefit from easement 700444. Journeys on "not via Birmingham" tickets used to benefit from easement 700445, but there are no "not via Birmingham" tickets left now from those stations.

Some more changes were published on Wednesday.
Changes from 07 Aug 2019 (269) to 14 Aug 2019 (270).

Permitted Route changes:
Accrington (ACR) to Birmingham Group (G02) lose KN+BP
This journey no longer has mapped routes via Nuneaton.

Accrington (ACR) to Nuneaton (NUN) lose KN
Blackburn (BBN) to Nuneaton (NUN) lose KN
These journeys no longer have mapped routes via Tamworth.

Ashford International (AFK) to Ebbsfleet International (EBD) gain AR+KL+HS
This journey now has mapped routes via Gravesend.

Birmingham Group (G02) to Blackburn (BBN) gain CM+CU lose BK BP+KN
Birmingham Group (G02) to Bolton (BON) gain CM lose BM BP+TM
These journeys no longer have mapped routes via Rugeley.

Blackburn (BBN) to Lichfield Trent Valley (LTV) gain KN+TV lose KN
This journey now has mapped routes using the direct line between Stoke and Rugeley.

Blackburn (BBN) to Rugeley Trent Valley (RGL) gain KN+TV lose BK+WM KN
This journey no longer has mapped routes via Wolverhampton.

Blackburn (BBN) to Tamworth (TAM) gain KN+TV lose KN
This journey now has mapped routes which use the Stoke-Rugeley line but don't go via Birmingham.

Bolton (BON) to Stoke-On-Trent (SOT) gain MH lose MH+EM
No effect.

Easement changes:

Added:

700871 (Map) Customers travelling to Edinburgh and beyond, whose normal route is via Newcastle and Berwick upon Tweed, may travel via Carlisle during engineering works on Saturdays between 14 September and 12 October 2019; Sundays 15 and 22 September 2019. This map easement applies in both directions
There are no trains running in the 90 miles between Drem and Morpeth then. There are no buses either serving Acklington, Widdrington or Pegswood on some of the Saturdays, so I'm not sure the timetable has been finalised yet.

700872 (Local) Customers travelling from Rhoose Cardiff International Airport station to or via Cardiff Central may travel via Bridgend. This local easement applies in both directions.
From what I can tell, it doesn't usually help much to go that way to or from Cardiff, but it can be better on a Sunday evening, or for some connections.

There were a couple of easement changes yesterday.
Changes from 14 Aug 2019 (270) to 21 Aug 2019 (271).

Easement changes:

Added:

700873 (Doubleback) Journeys from Kings Park, Croftfoot, Burnside (Strathclyde) and Kirkhill, to Uddingston and Bellshill may travel via Cambuslang and doubleback through Newton (Lanarkshire). This doubleback easement applies in both directions
There's already a similar local easement (700867), and all of the stations here are associated with Newton, so I don't know how much effect this has.

These easements certainly seem to affect nre.co.uk, as Mount Florida-Bellshill is shown as being valid via Newton and Cambuslang, whereas Mount Florida-Holytown isn't.

Changed:

700119 (Circuitous Route) Customers travelling from Shelford via Royston to London Kings XCross, London St Pancras, Faringdon or via Faringdon, may not travel via Cambridge. This easement applies in both directions.
This is for the Thameslink trains to Cambridge. You don't have to use Thameslink if you have an "+any permitted" ticket, of course.

Another easement was published this afternoon.

Changes from 21 Aug 2019 (271) to 27 Aug 2019 (272).

Easement changes:

Added:

700874 (Circuitous Route) Customer travelling from Southend Victoria and Southend Central to West Ham on Super Off Peak Day Single, Super Off Peak Day Return tickets and Greater Anglia Duo return tickets may not travel on c2c services. Instead the should travel on Greater Anglia services via Wickford. This circuitous route easement applies in both directions

If you don't travel to West Ham with C2C, you can still use the District Line to Upminster. At the other end, I can only assume that you're expected to turn up at Southend Victoria with a ticket from Southend Central (as only some of the super off peak tickets mentioned in the easement are issued to or from "Southend Stations").

As it happens, there are no mapped West Ham-Wickford or Wickford-Southend Central routes, and Southend Victoria is associated with Wickford. If a positive easement has been created to support the second sentence, this means it would only be working with shortest routes.
