I might have a fight on my hands!
Fingers crossed:)

Pictures below of ‘Press Launch’ of Azuma at York today. Nice that the public view was actually a better light;)

Very daft laddy question... I take it Mallard was shunted into position for these shots? Can Mallard run under its own steam?
A bit off topic, but part of the story of today, pic of Team Red shunting Mallard.

No she's not cleared to steam at all and the NYMR have always demurred on the basis of cost (stung by Flying Scotsman I guess) and preserving her as is rather than stripping loads of bits out to bring her back into service. Particularly when there are other A4s in steaming condition and mainline certified.

NRM surely?
Needs major/new firebox/boiler repairs as far as I know. I recall reading it was patched up into a just about steamable condition for a few limited runs when it was last out on the mainline for a few specials in the 1980s.

Thanks for the photos. "Mallard" ended up adjacent to an LNER HST before being shunted back round to NRM: It's strange to think that there's the same 40 year age gap between "Mallard" and the HST, and the HST and an Azuma!

It's interesting to reflect on how long distance UK rail traction has developed: From streamlined steam, to high performance fixed formation diesel, to underfloor engined diesel/electric hybrid.

Top and tail because of reversing needed to get from the NRM to the station?
Yes, several reversals. York NRM to York Siemens, reverse, through the station to York Holgate Loop, reverse, then into platform 7 (which faces south and not a through road).

You are welcome, I’m pleased that you like the pictures. Quite so about the nose ends. Pic below of Mallard with 43305, Azuma launch branding in the background.

Thanks for this info.

I made it up to Waverley last night for about 10:30, and was surprised to find the Azuma already sitting in platform 5. Even more confused were the LNER staff and Newcastle FC supporters who had traveled up for a game, and who thought the Azuma was going to take them home.

Ah yes, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers. They travelled on the run to Berwick as well, playing their first ever gig at 125mph - appropriately enough in Coach C for "Chilli"!

Was this last night, or this morning? I gather there was a wee party of sorts this morning.

This morning. Was all goimg off, tv, newspapers , dignatries, press , bands and all staff any Where near the sealed off platform 2 where all in full uniform and looking very smart indeed.

The livery did look good on the train to be fair.

My guess is on uniforms worn by LNER's Scotland-based staff, although it's possible their English staff may be able to order a tie or similar item in the tartan if they wish.

Yes, yesterday all the male staff had tatratan ties on and the female staff tartan neck scarves.

It was 800 104 on the rear (Couldn't get near the front. Lots of security etc. ) if you want to keep an eye out for it.

I have a short video of it from the rear leaving the station but it's too large to upload on here.

First Edinburgh service was ‘piped in’ to Kings Cross this morning (LNER piper visible extreme left of photo). Tartan livery looks good!731986BF-690D-4D5D-A108-768C67D4631E.jpeg
