Major Overhead wires problems between Wakefield and Doncaster coupled with trespass near Newcastle means a bad start to the day for the northern part of the ECML

Indeed, LNER have advised that due to damage to the overhead electric wires between Doncaster and Leeds all lines are blocked with the impact being that services running through these stations will be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or diverted with this expected until end of service.

Note that Transpennine Express are conveying passengers between York and Leeds in both directions until further notice.
Hull Trains are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice.

Northern have advised the following which is a tad more specific then LNER:

Due to damage to the overhead wires services between Wakefield & Doncaster and Moorthorpe and Wakefield are unable to run. Network Rail staff are on site. The estimate for the line reopening is 12:00, this will be for diesel trains only so will not affect the Leeds - Sheffield route, the Leeds - Doncaster route is operated with electric trains and Northern are currently in the process of sourcing diesel trains to provide a service over this route. The line is not expected to be available for electric trains for the duration of today.

Road transport has been requested in lieu of the cancelled services but is proving very difficult to source, all suppliers within a 2 hour radius have been contacted but without success, at present passengers are request to find their own alternative method of transport.

Leeds - Doncaster services are currently withdrawn.
Leeds - Sheffield via Moorthorpe will run between Sheffield and Moorthorpe only.

Please note journey times will be extended by 45 - 60 minutes via road transport.

Passengers from Bolton-upon-Dearne, Goldthorpe, Thurnscoe and Moorthorpe travelling to Leeds/Wakefield can do so via Meadowhall and into Leeds via and alternative route. The Leeds - Sheffield via Barnsley route is fully operational with a regular service. Passengers at Doncaster can use LNER and Cross Country services to York and then on to Northern or Transpenine Express services from York to get to Leeds.

Not good when the Sheffield to Manchester Airport services are already diverted via Huddersfield

Why can't Azumas run on diesel power on a diversionary route?

Some trains appear to be doing just that. Whether they are Azumas or HST I can't say.

I booked the 1103 from King's Cross which was supposed to be an Azuma but that is cancelled

It's less than a month since the wires where down in the same area. All adds ammunition to the anti electrification brigade.
I wonder which train brought them down.
Sad that LNER dont seem to be using the 2 alternative routes (Hambleton or Knottingley). Grand central cancelled too.

They seem to be cancelling the x03 irrespective of the traction type, probably to ensure they have enough stock to the revised service as a lot of Leeds services are still electric and 1tph is better than random cancellations

The 1006 London - Newark was cancelled, suspect either the stock didn't make it south or the crews are displaced considering it didn't go near the impacted area.

I see the first Saturday Azuma from Scotland was also cancelled (0655 ex Edinburgh)

Well, the 1103 would usually be formed off of the unit from Hull. Today it appears that rather than forming the 1103 it is instead going to form the 1135. So I'd suggest that it's not been cancelled due to an Azuma issue but for another reason seeing as the Azuma is still going to Leeds just half an hour later.

GC have also cancelled services, even though they are diesel, and indeed only reach the electrified section of line just north of Doncaster.

On a train...somewhere!

The Askern Branch is blocked this weekend with all (instead of the usual some) GC trains booked via Hare Park/Adwick.

What did XC do with their hourly service via Wakefield and Leeds? Did they go direct Sheffield - Doncaster - York?

They tend to go via Pontefract when something goes wrong with their usual routes.

The Leeds services may have also gone via Barnsley between Sheffield and Leeds

Edit: it has

When the ECML wires are replaced after damage , do the NR engineers upgrade so that section of wires will be more robust in the future?
It would be a missed opportunity to simply replace like with like on an installation that is known to be easily damaged.

This wasn’t an issue with the infrastructure per se, rather something else bringing it down...

The Northern EMUs replaced by a 142 & 3-coach 144 yesterday, with the 142 getting swapped out for a pair of 153s.
Today was the same pair of 153s & a 2-coach 144, although the 153s might have been swapped out in the afternoon as there was a pair of 153s at Doncaster when I went past on the 16:15-ish London train.

Most of the LNER services to Leeds today (Sunday) were either HST or 800s, although that might have been normal for a Sunday these days.

No, it was the NR test train. There's a photo going around on Facebook currently of a bright yellow door tangled in the OLE. Looks as though it opened and caused the damage and was subsequently ripped off the train.
As that’s now been leaked (lovely job whoever that was ), I can now confirm that the NR test train was the instigator in this incident due to human error, and a Colas-hired 73 was the unit involved.

3Q28 was the headcode, and the location was right by Hemsworth Loop.

What surprises me was the fact that the door managed to take down a double channel mast, which is an achievement in itself...!
