Oh dear.
Nobody could have known Anderson would get a recurrence of his previous calf injury (could they? I hope not.) England, presumably batting last, are going to miss him terribly if he doesn't reappear (and would it be wise to even if he was up for it?)
I thought when I heard the respective teams that Australia had probably got it right and England wrong, though at least Woakes correctly got the nod. OK, Wood is injured and Archer apparently not really considered for selection because of what exactly? But then not to select Stone on his home pitch when his pace had discomfited some of the (admittedly rookie) Ireland batsmen OR Sam Curran, whose batting at least shows up some of the higher order's. Curran was Man of the Match in the last Edgbaston test against India in August last year. Mooen Ali should have been left out imo - Curran is more likely to make runs these days and Ali is back to his 'I'm not the no. 1 spin bowler' spiel, so let's take him at his word and share spin (if needed) between Root and Denly.

Australia are weakened from the off in including a player just there to captain in the enforced absence of Steve Smith from that role. Tim Paine is probably not even the best wicketkeeper in their side, so we have an advantage from the start. On the other hand, I believe they've chosen well in their bowlers, though. James Pattinson has a good record in tests since his return from long-term injury, and has outbowled Broad in the matches they've both played for Notts this and last year. The Aussie broadcaster whose name I forget who's on TMS wrote on the BBC website prior to the match that he thought Pattinson, if selected, would win a match this series (let's hope not the current one!): on the other hand, he wondered which Mitchell Starc would turn up for this series, seeming to fear it'd be the 0-89 off 18 overs one. That other Mitchell, M. Johnson, was a very hot or very cold bowler too, wasn't he? Peter Siddle will never let you down, has been on excellent form for Essex, knows how to hold a bat and to score with it. An unheralded bowler, but he'll try his heart out- worth trying in preference to Hazlewood imo, the latter never really improving or living up to the early McGrathesque hype.

Bring on Day Two!

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
However, how did England let Australia go from 122-8 to 284 all out?

Smith's innings was genuinely stirring stuff. I felt the boos from some of the crowd at the end were pretty unsavoury - he's paid his penalty and has returned to play some remarkable cricket, getting the Aussies out of a hole in the process.

Have to say yesterday I was pretty annoyed with Anderson if he wasn't really fit to play, but am happier today with our batting so far.

edit
So Root gets out :(

Can't say that I agree sadly. He deserves everything he gets as far as I'm concerned. Bancroft I have sympathy for he's served his punishment and hopefully he will go on to have a long successful career. But Smith and Warner? They get none of my sympathy. They knew what they were doing was wrong and not only did they disgrace themselves Warner ended up bringing a young player into the scheme as well. Smith and Warner should be grateful to have a place in the side. If I were an Australian selector I'd not want either of them in my team or, more importantly, in my dressing room talking to my players.

Since when has taking the new ball mid over been allowed? I always thought it had to be at the end of an over.
As far as I know, it has always been available at any time after the statutory period: I'd go so far as to say that it was usually mid over (2nd or 3rd ball) when it got taken. The benefits of constant free-to-view TV!

Ive only caught up with most of the action. Namely Ive been at the football and work.

The Thunderbirds do less rescuing than Steve Smith does for Australia.
The crowd got a bit silly for mine. Custom says to stand and applaud a century and booing him as he comes off really is classless. But hey if booing him leads to a century every time then keep going.

Day 2 we really did bowl without a lot of luck. Burns at one stage 1/4 shots were false.

Can we have a talk about the umpiring. Both of them have been dreadful. Itchy trigger fingers one day. Stuck down the next. All wrong.

Yes it's been woeful hasn't it? I actually thought the umpiring in the world cup was a bit pedestrian as well to be honest! But the last two days have been another level.

I must admit I do wonder what has happened. International umpires have always been a bit variable and have all had their moments but this is a serious dip in quality.

Most of the best umpires are Australian or English. Richard Kettlebrough is easily the best out there.

There is a theory that DRS has made the umps a bit complacent knowing if they stuff up theyre saved by DRS

Yes. Each team gets 2 reviews during each Innings - if a team lose a review (i.e. if the Umpire made the correct decision) then that review is lost, however if they win the review then that review is retained (i.e. if they had 2 reviews, they keep 2 reviews). Similar to Tennis

Someone should ask that Geelong supporter then how his team went.

The England collapse is being enjoyed by members of both Melbourne and Richmond in the bar.

Yes not sure how he's kept his place at this point. He's not getting runs and his bowling is a bit pedestrian.

70 more and counting! :D
Yes, but once one's out the innings is presumably over and then they have to open the bowling after a 10 minute break (unless...)

Australia lead 101 - Woakes hasn't bowled. Mooen, since his first test against Australia in Cardiff in 2015 earned him 5 for 100 and something has 10 wickets in 14 tests at approaching 80 average against the Aussies. He's more likely to get a single figure score than one over 20, let alone 40. Yet Leach gets left out!! Denly is our only hope with spin in this match, I feel. It won't necessarily stop Lyon getting wickets in our second innings, mind. Bookies now giving 37% chance of winning.

Sigh...

Well at least we got to enjoy a couple of days of thinking we might be able to win this ruddy thing. Still, normal service is resumed!
