Looks like the S&B clear gates are being replaced with London-style Cubic gates (as used by the new Northern franchise)? Will the Southern entrance gate line also be replaced?

The re-re-refurbished First Class lounge also re-reopened today (image source: Twitter.com/sambeth0310).

They’re still in the bubble wrap this evening, this morning the idea seemed to be exit through the normal barriers then out through the new area, coming back I was guided by a member of staff to go via the WHSmith bit instead!

I would imagine it is a fairly simple job to switch over to them anyway as the infrastructure is already in place for the existing barriers

Don’t think the roof is that far off either! They do seem to have been cracking on with the job despite the challenges of having to carry it all out whilst passengers go about their day to day business!

My friend told me the new ticket gates are located in the main concourse before all the shops. Does this mean the shops will only be open to rail users? Also, can somebody confirm whereabouts the new ticket gates will be located?

Here is an update on the new Ticket barriers at Leeds. It seems to be progressing well and is certainly more visible at the moment with some of the hoarding removed as work progresses. Looks like it should be done shortly.

Whoever's in charge of refilling the concourse cashpoints seems to be getting a bit slapdash these days. Seem to be more queues and empty machines.

Noticed today some of the scaffolding had been dismantled to reveal part of the renewed South Concourse roof. Its the section closest to ticket barriers. Looking good. Light flooding in. Sorry no pics.

That took me (eventually) to a page full of posts from 2014. I can't for the life of me understand how they've made that forum so bad... Any chance you could post the pictures here?

I agree , since the revamp its awful to use.

Amazing how much light just a little bit uncovered was letting through this morning! The new ticket barrier line seemed to be well on the way too, weren't they meant to be relocating the ticket office windows elsewhere or I am just dreaming?

I'm not sure about the ticket office, that might be part of a further phase that I've not heard about. As far as I understand it, the current works involve the roof, new gateline & the larger pedestrian area at the entrance & along New Station Street.

Network Rail has now put out a press release with a picture and update - suggests it will all be fully revealed by the end of month:
https://www.networkrailmediacentre....-to-emerge-from-the-darkness-at-leeds-station

New roof starts to emerge from behind the hoardings at Leeds Station

Passengers at Leeds have been given their first glimpse of the new station roof as construction hoardings start to come down.

Last weekend saw the crash deck panels removed on the project to replace the old, wooden roof with a new transparent one that will allow natural light into the south concourse.

And by the end of August, passengers’ patience will be rewarded as the scaffolding and protective hoardings that have stood for the past ten months are stripped back to reveal the new structure in its entirety.

The refurbished public toilets – which are now free to use – will reopen early next week, while the new automatic ticket gates, which is being repositioned into a straight line, will come into use in late-September. Work to part-pedestrianise New Station Street is also progressing well.

Mark Bloor, Programme Manager for Network Rail, said: “Passengers have been extremely patient with us during the past ten months while we’ve been working away behind the hoardings, but I’m delighted that we’re now able to start revealing the new roof. In a few weeks the roof, the new ticket gates and New Station Street will all be complete and I ask that passengers continue to bear with us as we finish off this series of projects that are intended to breathe new life into Leeds station.”

Notes to Editors
The new roof and gateline are the first step towards the delivery of the transformational Leeds Integrated Station Masterplan (LISM) - a collaboration between the rail industry, Leeds City Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

The new roof is made of ETFE - Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene - a flourine based plastic.

Another planet...
The obvious question to ask is why this wasn't part of the refurbishment at the turn of the century? The lack of attention to the main concourse made it seem like a bit of a half-a***d job.

Still, better late than never... though those yellow panels with their irregular holes look like they're covered in flies!

Presumably because there wasn't anything particularly wrong with the old roof ?

The turn of the century remodelling was focused on increasing capacity, whereas the new roof is more for aesthetic purposes.

The obvious answer is that the station reconstruction ran over budget by £80m.

No matter what they do to Leeds station they will never be able to beautify it. It's pig ugly but functional.

Isn't the station a nice 1930s one, upgraded often? I thought it was an old 1960s BR office block by the notorious Poulson that was the main problem, as with so many.

There's some alright 1930s bits, but a lot of it dates from the 60s. Personally I think it's alright, and now they're sorting the roof and gateline they've addressed all the important issues. It's never going to be some grand architectural statement but it's not that ugly, and compared to a lot of central Leeds it's quite nice

The Northern concourse is superb and has really come into its own since the works. I can only see this becoming more pronounced now that half of the outlets on the South concourse have been done away with. Even the original ceiling on the Southern concourse looked very tasteful until someone slopped emulsion all over it.

I wonder where the bank of screens that were in the centre of the concourse will go once the works are almost complete?

They'll be placed in such a location that passengers stop to look at the screens in just the right place to impede flow to/from the ticket barriers. Just like the screens 'airside' do now.

So this new roof is going to let in lots and lots of light during the day...what about at night?!

I noticed this walking through Leeds station yesteday evening, it made the concourse very dark in appearance as it was dark outside! Where is the 'less natural' lighting going to be situated on the roof?
