Whilst I cannot condone adrock1976's behaviour and would like to see 142095 scrapped immediately it was in working order at Middlesbrough this morning on 2D12 the 0709 Bishop Auckland-Saltburn

Much as I loathe them is withdrawing the first 142s just before wheel flats season such a good idea?

Northern always seems to have a stock crisis in Autumn...

The DFT don't allocate units for "just in case" or contingency scenarios.

One had been through Longsight wheel lathe backend of last week, it was also noticed that one car had a newly fitted reconditioned engine. Didn’t note the number but I’m guessing this will be around for while.

Was the engine painted in a shade of green similar to Malachite green? I have seen a number like that recently as well as 150s with reconditioned engines the same colour.

Rail magazine is saying seven Class 142 will be withdrawn this weekend.
142005/016/021/022/025/046/066 are due to be withdrawn from traffic on August 10 and stored pending disposal. A further five, 142012-014/030/033, will move to Heaton. This appears to mean no net change at Heaton and a loss of seven units at Newton Heath, unless my allocation list is out of date. Posts #1121 and 1124 suggest it's ten units going.

Yes I was under the impression all 10 were going, 012-14/6/021/2/5/30/3/ and 66. Saw the Rail article which states 7 are for the chop. Somebody at work mentioned that the 5 NH units were just transferring to Heaton to replace the five lost that were allocated to Heaton. The other two to be withdrawn were NH units. Theses being 005 and 046. A little confused now.. hmmm!

I'll be honest, in the recent warmer weather I've much preferred a 142 with all the windows open to a 150. Sit by the doors and you get a decent breeze coming through. Plus they're less likely to have the heating left on than the 150s...

I saw 142046 yesterday.
It was working on Chester-Stockpot line.
So,it might be the last time I will see it.
142029 was in use also.
We will soon see if planned disposals happen in the coming days.

It was previously mentioned that 142025 was to be withdrawn this weekend but had been withdrawn earlier in the week with engine failure. I have since been told that it was a burst radiator and was repaired. Apparently, it was in service yesterday according to the Class 142 sightings thread. Things therefore seem to be in a state of flux.

Is Northern planning a media event given the high profile and public interest in their withdrawal? A press trip to Booths on a couple would be appropriate, though more realistically a photo-opportunity of a couple leaving a main station empty symbolically making their way to store might be enough to make the point.

Hopefully a Farewell Party is arranged, alike First Great Western when they had the 142s...

TfW is doing a Valleys Pacer farewell tour on 6th October (which seems a bit early imo) with 2 Pacers being painted into the red/white/green Valley Lines livery apparently

Wouldn't that be something.
I liked the old Valley Lines livery too.

They did something similar with the Class 504s in 1991. A Granada TV report showed a few units linked together leaving Bury Interchange empty for the last time.

142023 en route to MBR this morning. Bench seats, floor awash, windows running with condensation. 21st century passenger experience?

Good riddance.
Incidentally, am I right in surmising that Pacers withdrawn or transferred away from Newton Heath are being replaced by other classes, but that Pacers withdrawn at Heaton are being replaced by Pacers from Newton Heath?

Pretty much, though Heaton units are also being replaced by 156s cascaded down by 158s.
