Northern operates more stations than any other single TOC in the UK. So, how many stations cannot be reached directly or with a single change from any Northern-managed station?

I would suggest most of the Marston Vale line, though I'm ready to be proven wrong.

Edits after a few requests for clarification:
  • Light-rail/metro is valid as long as you start and finish at a national rail station.
  • You can walk between Kings Cross and St Pancras without it counting as a change

Examples:
  • Norwich is accessible without changing because the East Midlands Trains Liverpool-Norwich service calls at Northern-operated Manchester Oxford Road
  • Cam and Dursley is accessible in one change because the Aberdeen to Penzance service calls at Morpeth, so Cam and Dursley can be reached by changing at Bristol.
  • Heathrow Central is accessible in one change because various services serve Kings Cross from Northern stations, and it's then possible to change to the Piccadilly Line
  • Covent Garden doesn't count due to not being a national rail station
  • Stourbridge Town is not accessible because all routes from every Northern station require more than one change.

I would think that you would be looking at most of the South East of the UK, but if you put Scotland into the mix then you will have .... well quite alot if someone wants to reply accurately to the situation proposed.

CrossCountry stopping at Morpeth means all stations out of Edinburgh are only a single change away. Ditto Glasgow Central (also served by the services that go along the Tyne Valley line) and Aberdeen (for Aberdeen-Inverness).

The Far North and Kyle lines are 2 changes away, as are all stations on the Maryhill line, except Anniesland.

Technically the West Highland Line is only a single change away because of the sleeper “day” service from Edinburgh.

That’s a lot to be going on with...

With the exception of the Aire, Wharfe and Calder valley routes (assuming changing from Bradford Forster Square to Bradford Interchange is classed as a single change), pretty much most of the country requires at least two changes if traveling to or from Baildon.

You can get to London with a single change at Shipley!

We've established that the Aberdeen-Penzance route gives long tentacles to change from due to a call at Morpeth.

The Liverpool-Norwich gives another tentacle (from, eg, Oxford Road)

Wilmslow gives a three long tentacles - to Pembrokeshire, to Bournemouth (some peak XC services) and to Euston.

I believe that the whole of Wales is reached within one change from a station managed by Northern!

LNER services calling at Morpeth and Alnmouth also get you to Stevenage (for Thameslink) and King's Cross, but I can't find any direct trains from Northern stations to St Pancras.

Melksham?
Yep. An isolated dot far from its nearest companion.

Add in Heathrow, Marlow, Henley, Windsor and Greenford branches (or do some have Reading trains, say for depot-related activity) and that's it for GWR land.

Chiltern, WMR and LNWR quite a lot covered via New Street, Coventry, Leamington and Banbury (start at Wilmslow or Congleton, which are Northern maintained) and Crewe, but there's a few gaps: Hartlebury, Aylesbury branches, Marston Vale, Abbey branch, Stourbridge Town, stations via Whitlock's End (and a couple between Dorridge and Moor Street?) and some of the stations in/near London.

SWT having Brockenhurst, Southampton, Basingstoke and Reading picks up a lot of stations in that part of the world.

Just realised I was wrong as there are a couple of Cheltenham - Southampton via Swindon services a day, so would still be 1 change in the evening.

I think Cardiff Bay is 2 changes, it looks like the morning train now comes from Coryton instead of direct from Central (at least when I looked last week)

It may be cheating, but you can make it from Heathrow using the Piccadilly line to King's Cross St. Pancras and connecting to a wide selection of services from the mainline stations.

Would arriving at King's Cross from Northern land and departing from St. Pancras into the South East count as a single change?

They're two different stations, yes, but on the same tube station and to be honest it's only a walk next door.

I'm including light rail/metro, as long as you start and finish your journey at a National Rail station.

No, I would say it doesn't count as a change. The two have their own minimum connection time.

Cardiff Bay isn't.
in the 2 changes from London threads a Cardiff Central - Cardiff Bay thread gets used to debunk. @Parallel however thinks that train is now gone.

So yes, Cardiff Bay is the one Welsh station that's 2-Change.

---

Piccadilly line doesn't give you Heathrow Central. But is KXSP the same station as Kings Cross anyway? If so then that removes West Ham, Barking, Harrow-on-the-Hill, Rickmansworth, Chorleywood, Chalfont and Latimer, Amersham, Cannon Street, Liverpool Street and Victoria from being 2-change.

It has gone. It comes from Coryton instead of Cardiff Central now. The first service on a Sunday is a through service but there is nothing arriving into Cardiff Central other than an early morning Swansea to Paddington service to connect into it.

There's no rule about how long the wait is at the change station in these threads - just that it's the same station. Cardiff Bay is surely back on for being one (overnight, Saturday only) change from Wilmslow.

Oh, I wasn't sure whether we had to be realistic or not!
