hi there,

I’ve recently had a PTS medical with network rail. They said I have mild hearing loss in my left ear, although I have had my hearing tested elsewhere twice recently and they said my hearing is perfect. I did however meet the network rail standards. I am only 22 I am just wondering what’s going on and why I may be seeing different test results.

Can anybody help here? Also, how often is hearing tested once you start with network rail?

The environment in which they carry out the test may have an impact. It should be a sound proof booth, but sometimes this isn’t the case. Or it’s the other way round. The booth may have been so well insulated you’re struggling to hear the beeps over your own pulse rate. Also, slight tinnitus may be more evident in a sound proof booth which may deem recognising the tones a bit of a nightmare. You may not notice this day to day until out in that scenario.

Hi there,

Thanks for the reply. All 3 of the tests were in a sound proof both, but for the medical at OH assist I could hear noises outside of the booth from within it, and the headphones were awful compared to those at the other places I had the hearing tests. Do network rail test on frequencies 0.5, 1 and 2 and no higher than that?

I’m not sure on the specifics at network rail but there is probably an industry standard I’d imagine. I wouldn’t be too bothered if I were you as they passed you anyway, and you won’t need another medical for at least a couple of years.

Hi,

They said the limit is 90 is and my score was 60 so even if that it is accurate it may take me many years to get to 90 hopefully
