Nice and cheap as well
The Class 313s, a revolutionary design of dual-voltage Electric Multiple Unit when new in 1976, are now the oldest EMUs still in service on the British mainland. Those that have remained on the Great Northern are being replaced by new Class 717 units and it is planned that all will be withdrawn from service by the end of September. A six-car train is being retained specially for a celebratory run on the lines for which they were designed.

This tour is also a farewell to Govia Thameslink’s popular and charismatic Engineering Director, Gerry McFadden, who is leaving the company, having been in charge of the fleet through a hectic period of intense change, of which the retirement of the 313s represents the conclusion.

The exact route is still being developed, but expect a journey from King’s Cross to Royston and back, taking in the main line via Welwyn and the Hertford branch, together with a trip ‘down the hole’ to Moorgate and back. Hornsey Reversing Siding, the Ferme Park Flyover and hopefully Letchworth Arrival and Departure Line are expected to be included for the benefit of the yellow pen brigade.

The trains have no toilets but there will be a couple of breaks along the way, along with a leg-stretching break of just under an hour at Hertford North. There will be no onboard catering so you will need to bring everything you require, or purchase items at King’s Cross. There will be no seat reservations so you can sit where you wish, and in the interests of comfort we will sell tickets only up to two-thirds of nominal seating capacity.

This is a charity trip, the proceeds of which will be donated to GTR’s nominated good causes. There will be an onboard raffle which may feature a few unusual prizes!

If you want to sample a 313 - plenty still in service. It is a pity to miss the railtour of course but you can still sample the units :)

The website linked in the original post says that the Availability for the Adult tickets is FULL. Interesting - have they filled it up already?!

Apparently they have, filled up in 48 hours I believe (or so?) no surprise at that price. I was on break at work when I found this and was showing 'NEARLY FULL', I knew I was away working a tour in October but couldn't remember when, and didn't think I'd even have time to check so booked it, now just seeing if I can actually turn up (thankfully the week working away is the week before!) if I can't get the day off I don't mind loosing out on £25

OK - at £25 for a nice trip around on a 313, it's not surprising!

You could ask them if they have a waiting list in case anyone already booked drops out, but it would, I'm afraid, be very likely they've already got a very long waiting list for such an eventuality.

i think on the website is says "we will sell tickets only up to two-thirds of nominal seating capacity."

bit of a shame as wouldnt have minded going, if anything it would have been more authentic to have a packed train

Plenty of posts on this forum explaining what this means and how tours can be ruined.

I would imagine the motor coaches will be the first coaches to fill up, with the centre coaches being for late comers. Unless they do what the BLS do with some unit/light rail tours and assign you a coach but you are free to sit anywhere within said coach.

I certainly expect sitting under the pantograph would be the last place anyone would want. I never sat there unless the train was full as I enjoy looking out the windows

Ah forgot this thread was here - posted an update in the 313 thread

Here's the rear carriage as the train passed through FP a couple of minutes down on account of a late departure from the Cross. Quite smart, I thought. And no, I can't hold a camera straight......
