I'm planning a trip to Perpignan this autumn. There are some through Barcelona to Lyon trains which call at Perpignan. Oui. Sncf is currently selling Barcelona to Lyon advance singles for €29 on the website: bargain! But it charges €79 to board the same train at Perpignan to go to Lyon. Is it possible to buy the international €29 ticket and merely board at Perpignan or will Sncf staff prevent me from doing this? Will my "no show" at Barcelona result in my reserved seats being reallocated (the train stops at Girona en route to Perpignan).

I'm not sure what the SNCF rules for "starting short" on an advance ticket are but I would imagine they are similar to what they are in this country i.e. a complete "no no". Others may be able to advise differently though.

As a rule for SNCF, starting/stopping short, whether on an advance or a full-price ticket, is not frowned upon with the same rigour as outre-Manche, whether with an e-ticket or an IATA ticket (except for Ouigo). This is true even when there is an "accueil-embarquement" i.e. ticket barriers/pre-check at the intermediate station.
But this is an international train and I am not sure whether the rules apply similarly.

It is not forbidden to start or stop short on SNCF trains so you will be fine.
In fact this situation where a longer international journey is cheaper than a shorter domestic one is not uncommon; it can also be encountered in Bellegarde on Paris - Geneva trains.
There is also another quirk on France - Germany TGVs where a journey can be cheaper on the DB website (or v/v) as SNCF and DB use different fare buckets.

Thanks for this advice, I'm considering a trip up to Lyon from Perpignan and returning to UK from there. Whilst the RENFE SNCF direct service is tempting I saw some loco hauled TERs on the Cerbere to Avignon route in May, so might try to do loco haulage to Lyon.
