Today's Railways UK says that all 9 Eversholt-owned class 170s ( including those converted to class 171s) will head for EMR, as will all those currently operated by WMR and, interestingly, most of the 3-car former Greater Anglia units once TfW's new trains have arrived.

Take it with a pinch of salt until its actually confirmed

Just heard on the TfW 170 thread that next month Modern Railways are doing a section on the future of all the 170s said to be going to EMR

That will hopefully have actually confirmation from the TOCs on whats really happening

You cannot compare like with like against the current fleet, as the plan is that the Liverpool-Nottingham section will transfer out.

When will that happen though? i can see the EMR 170s running the liverpool service for some time until the service is transferred out.

So did I, but perhaps it's part of a plan.
TfW wants to run an hourly Swansea to Bristol service (I think), and this will require more trains. TfW could retain most of the 3-car class 175s to replace the 3-car class 170s and operate the new service. This frees up the class 170s for EMR.

If I'm right, TFWs application to run to Bristol was turned down

I doubt it. If the Liverpool service remains with EMR for longer than expected it is likely that they'll retain the number of 158s needed to operate it and continue to use them.

That well known source of reputable information. If it's on wiki it must be true.
Only the /1s are going; a friend of mine who works for Siemens has said that the plan for the /2s is Thailand to bolster the Airport Rail Link in Bangkok. They currently operate 4x 4-car 360s for Express services, and 5x 3-car units for "City" services (i.e. commuter trains on the corridor), but services have been suspended for the past five years due to a stock shortage.
If they were to send the 5 360/2s over, they could, in one fell swoop, form all units as 4 cars, and solve the stock shortage crisis.

This is off topic though, but only serves to show that only the 360/1s are going to EMR.

I have now removed this vandalism once again...
Does EMR need 5 car and 10 car trains? I can think of another operator who could make better use them

Should have news on the EMR 170s this week at least

There's 21 360/1s, and they could run every Corby service as a 12 car with 18 units. So they definitely don't need anymore anyway.

Which I'm fairly certain is the plan.
While hassle, makes me wonder why they don't use the extra units to reform the fleet to take out the cab cars and run them as proper 12-coach trains.
They will probably outlive their life on the Corby services so no need to think about future use.

As far as im aware EMR are planning to have the majority of the Corby service as a 8 car with 12 cars during the peaks

Is it likely the 360/1s not running a corby service would be used elsewhere which is electrified on EMR?

No. Because there aren't any other entirely electrified EMR routes which is why they don't have any electric trains at present.

That's for a half-hourly service. For completeness I should point out that there almost certainly aren't enough paths to run it more frequently even if there was demand, and the platforms at St Pancras and elsewhere aren't long enough to run more than 12 cars of 20m stock. So in short there is no reason for EMR to need more than 21 units.

Guess the 4 car 171's will go on the Nottingham to Norwich runs.

Might make more sense to reform the units to 3-car for a more standardised fleet particularly as most Norwich trains are 2-car 158s at present East of Nottingham.

That would make sense and boost capacity equally across the region.

Presumably the use of 8-car 360 units off-peak has the benefit of lower track access charges during the day as opposed to operating 12-car throughout the day.
But this would require the removal of 4-car units as ECS to somewhere like Cricklewood for stabling until they return to St Pancras for the evening peak.
I'm interested to know whether the additional ECS movements and daily splitting/rejoining would really save any costs. It might be just as efficient to use 12-car all day and balance the additional operating costs versus ECS and stabling costs.
Perhaps someone knows ?

Track access charges are fairly low, generally the reason for shorter services is to balance the maintenance costs and/or the lease costs.

However if the RSOCO wood otherwise be left with a micro fleet they may offer the extra units for a fairly nominal amount, say 18 units for £1 million with the extra 3 units costing an extra £1,000.

It being such a small amount that the TOC think we'll we might as well, but it saves the RSOCO a load of costs with having them sat idle and no scope to find another home.

Indeed it could even be that there's a reduction in costs to have the whole fleet, say £130,000 per coach or £100,000 pet coach if you take the whole fleet, meaning that it's cheaper to have 21 units than 17 and only slightly more than 16.

Perhaps they will detach a unit at Corby and run it ECS to Kettering where there are stabling sidings under construction?

They don’t serve Derby on the Liverpool - Norwich though do they? Thought they went via Alfreton.
They do currently on the East Midlands Liverpool to Norwich service but the Nottingham to Liverpool (via Alfreton) will transfer away from the East Midlands franchise to either Northern or Trans Pennine (most likely) with East Midlands running an Derby to Norwich service instead (and I'm sure I read somewhere that it may extend to Matlock but I'm not sure on this).
