Newcastle sees a link change for conductors in October where 15 lines of work plus one accommodated changes to 19 lines (including one accommodated, may be two to be confirmed) with one new starter and two recent transfers from northern all going live. At the same time I have been advised some 802 work and running to Edinburgh will be introduced. This appears to be October 21st which ties in with a recent cascade call where project director Chris Nutton also mentioned October 21st for 802s starting in service. Exactly what services and which trains I have still yet to establish so the usual caveats apply....

I thought that the restriction was only on raising the pan at speed. It can be dropped anywhere without problems (apart from loss of power if the diesels aren't running).
Perhaps because it is a relatively short distance from York to Colton, they have decided to do the change over at York while it is stood at the platform.

The only train to call at Chathill is the morning and evening commuter train to/from Newcastle. This train runs empty to Berwick to turnround for the journey back to Newcastle. There is no need for any other train to call to pan up or down or anything.
I was referring to the TPE services only, which is implied by the context of the thread, but I’ve edited the earlier post anyway.

Your Northern service is not really relevant to this discussion, but just for accuracy, it reverses at Belford.

There's now two 802s on Edge Hill, both plain grey. I assume it's 202 and 205?

The 802's are going to be welcome. I travelled on a 185 between Newcastle and York, and it seems a travesty to be running 100mph diesel trains on a line that offers overhead electric power and 125mph running. Also those 3-cars can be way too full to get a seat.
And i guess crossing the pennines it is another win, because performance wise they should be able to run at SP limits - as opposed to the heavyweight 185's. Exciting times for the UK rail industry. Almost every month there are new trains being brought into service!

Not sure if such a boom and bust nature is at all sustainable, and not really sure about the fact the a ton of stock some past life expired, some nearly and some not at all life expired all going at the same time. But here for TPE the 802s (and from what I can see, glossing over CAF build quality, all their new stock) do seem to make sense, even if a ton of 125s and 225s are effectively available for further use just now, if required some (ehem ScotRail) work done.

I’m not sure there are any SP diffs on the Trans Pennine main line (certainly not core North Route), but also I think 80x are RA 5 (I believe the same as a 185) which means they couldn’t run to SP diffs anyway as I believe that is limited to RA2.

There are SP diffs on the Hull line from Micklefield but those services stay as 185’s.

Apologies if this has been asked before, but is there a seating plan for the TPE 802 yet?

How far will Newcastle drivers take these trains?

Ever since the days of removing the loco hauled services from Transpennine Express in the late 1980s its always had a somewhat neglected feel to it. Some may say it’s because it goes nowhere near London and the South but whatever the reason the reality is that the new loco hauled and Nova Bi Modes will finally give back to Transpennine Express the Intercity style service it warrants.

Really? As a regular user of the service, I thought the 158s (an the frequency increases) were a vast improvement on the clapped-out old mk2 coaching stock. And that the 185s were a further improvement on the 158s. Now, I'm looking forward to the arrival of the Nova 1s.

I'm interested to know who maintains Trans pennines various new fleets. I dont think CAF have any maintenance facilities and Ardwick is Siemens site.
Thanks

Hitachi have their own facilities at Doncaster and within Heaton and craigentinny. York Siemens are also used for servicing as is edge hill while the CAF stock is maintained by Alsthom at Longsight and serviced at new facilities in Scarborough.

the stock itself may have been an improvement but as always has been the fashion there wasn’t enough of it. I used TPEX often from Scarborough to Leeds and Manchester and often the train was full to capacity.

Whenever I get on a 185 again I often find myself standing.

The quality of the stock has improved since the LHCS days but the length of train got worse.

My perception is that the LHCS will eventually be serviced at Arriva Traincare at Crewe, with the 397s at Longsight.
In Glasgow the 185/350s use Scotrail's Corkerhill depot, but with First taking over VTWC and therefore using Alstom at Polmadie we'll see how it turns out long term for the 397s (depending on what new trains FTWC buy).

The length of the train got shorter, but the frequency of the train doubled. It's the same problem that affected CrossCounty: the 'system' did not allow for trains to be lengthened to meet demand. (Unlike London Overground, where three-car trains were extended to four-car and again to five-car.

Yes and it’s a crying shame that the lessons weren’t learned and allowed to repeat with NSE when they replaced LHCS on London Oxford and London Salisbury/Exeter and then again with VXC.

The 158/159 and latterly 185 stock were all very comfortable and pleasant to travel on, they just were/are too short for the job.

Another great decision by the DfT...

Imagine if 185's were 4 car. Most likely TPE wouldn't have gone for Mk5a's and just one fleet (802's).

802201 is on the 06:03 Newcastle - Liverpool this morning. The unit was sat in P6 at Newcastle on diesel power when I saw it this morning

Just seen on Journey Check that it isn't calling at Chester-le-Street due to "this train not stopping in the correct position at a station". I hope this issue gets fixed quickly as otherwise Chester-le-Street would soon end up being skipped by almost everything that's booked to call there...

Think it's just a temporary thing as CASDO failed a couple of months ago and is being re-evaluated.

However it is 802 201 in its first passenger service, doing one out and back trip today.

Currently running 11 late but with missing the Chester le street stop and with 125 running to a 100mph schedule should be on time by York....
