Apologies all, second time posting on the forum and hoping I am posting this in the right area! Came across this on the Transport Scotland News section regarding Waverley.

£15 million approved to develop options for Waverley approaches
Preliminary work to significantly improve the rail network on the approaches to Edinburgh Waverley Station has been approved by the Transport Secretary, Michael Matheson.

The £15 million investment will enable the options for the Edinburgh Waverley Western Approaches (EWWA) project to be taken forward to Outline Business Case. This will explore three infrastructure options for delivering capacity and performance improvements in this section of the railway.

The western approach to Edinburgh Waverley is a critical location on the rail network and one of the busiest in Scotland. This means that a late running train (even by a couple of minutes) can cause significant delays to other services and often a knock-on impact throughout the wider network

Mr Matheson said:

“With Edinburgh being a key economic driver for the country, a reliable train service is essential for commuter and business travel. It provides confidence to businesses and commuters alike, that rail is the best option for their journey and thus enables the continued growth and prosperity of the city.

“One of the key aims of the Edinburgh Waverley Western Approaches project is to provide additional capacity to reduce these constraints, improve performance and give greater resilience across the railway.”

The three infrastructure options being explored are:

  • a new chord (Almond chord) with flat junctions at both Winchburgh and Almond
  • the Almond chord with a flat Winchburgh Junction and a grade separated Almond Junction
  • the Almond chord with grade separated junctions at both Winchburgh and Almond
The work being funded now will include detailed modelling to provide assurance on the performance benefits and help inform which option is most suitable, weighing up costs against the future needs of the railway.

The work will also provide a more detailed understanding of the potential costs of any option being taken forward.

I thought this investigative work might have already been done as part of the original EGIP plan, I guess not. Hopefully something gets announced during CP6.

I expect 3 is too pricey.

1 could cause conflicts for Fife.

2 seems the reasonable one - if trains are going via Almond Chord eastbound it’d be to avoid disruption Newbridge to Edinburgh Park/ Haymarket so the flat junction at Winchburgh might be OK. You could also still switch eastbound services via Almond Chord/Winchburgh without conflict if you leave all Westbound via Newbridge. That might not be difficult to achieve either, as all trains will be starting at Waverley.

It’ll depend on expected use and actual modelling of the scenarios, but that’d be my guess of recommended option at this early stage.

Don’t really expect any of it to happen... digital upgrade through the tunnels and garden (like Deansgate corridor in Manchester) and that’ll be it.

I would agree. Option 1 is pointless - we already have enough overloaded flat junctions such as Newbridge. But the residual service through the Winchburgh route will only be half-hourly I would have thought and a flyover there would come into the category of 'nice to have'.
