Would the ED inside a mixed pair need a minder driver, or are all the in cab controls merely nice to have?
AFAIK wouldn't need a minder driver in the ED. The 'extras' in the 92/73 cabs include things like warning lights if the Mk5s detect broken windows, fire alarms, hot axles etc and a comms link (phone!) to the Train Manager. If these aren't available then a good old fashioned walkie-talkie between driver and guard is the more low-tech (and probably more reliable!) method.

It would depend on the circumstances - if it was a last minute requirement, it'd be a case of whatever could be rustled up. GBRf don't typically have a lot of 66s in and around Scotland (and available), nor that many with RETB fitted. It'd definitely an option, but so would a 67 depending on what DB had in the area (there is currently one stationed at Craigentinny, although it is there to be the LNER T/bird).

If there was a longer-term known requirement (e.g. another 73/9 needs to go to Eastleigh for a few weeks for new wheelsets and another one is undergoing repairs, say) then it'd probably make more sense to hire a 67 for the month.

I suspect we'll see 67004 hang around a little while until the Mk5s have bedded in on the Highlander - and 73970 has made it back from Eastleigh and is back in service.

If we're talking about the Inverness portion lack of RETB isn't an issue as the single line sections of the HML are Track Circuit Block or Tokenless Block.

Another question - what's the current routine at Euston in the mornings, does the Highlander come into P1 and the lowlander P15?

Ah ok.

@JModulo is this what you meant when you said wednesday - wednesday morning arrival in London is the last one?

Wednesday night Northbound highlander departure to Scotland is booked to be mk5's.

Wednesday night Southbound highlander from Scotland to London will be the last run of the old stock.

Sorry, I'm getting confused! So is Tuesday night northbound Mark 5s to get them in position for Wednesday night southbound? Or are there various ecs moves to swap the stock over?

Rather predictably its in trouble further down the line.

You mean a 47/Duff has failed in service, something which has never happened before?

Did the coaches make it to Aberdeen in the end empty or will it be a bus or a service train for any passengers from Aberdeen tonight?

Double 73s took over the set from Ladybank and brought it to Aberdeen, 727 went ECS back to Craigentinny

No, Tuesday night Northbound and Southbound is old stock.

Wednesday night Northbound from Euston is MK5's

Wednesday night Southbound from Scotland will be MK2s/3s - last ever run.

From Thursday night every sleeper will booked to be MK5s.

Thanks and thanks again.

I hope they keep the duff well away from the action - I want to make it to Aberdeen!

I'm not sure if they've got enough free 73's so the 47 may make another appearance providing it can be repaired.

73967 + 73971 on 1B16 tonight.
In theory should be available until Mk5s come in mid-week should the 47 not want to play again.

73966 also available currently at Craigentinny.

Bit glum that their final days of Anglo-Scottish Mk 3 service came after such operational difficulties. I'll never forget the pleasures of waking up to the Scottish Highlands, supping a coffee while enjoying fresh air by a droplight window. They were stalwarts in their day, and will be missed. And am I correct in thinking that's the last of Mark 2s in regular service across the network?

Completely agree, waking up then slowly coming round with a cup of tea enjoying the views from the HML with a blast of crisp morning air (knowing I was nearly home) has been a real pleasure. Sadly the price rises since Serco have taken over mean I no longer use the beds, and am a seat user only now. Will see what the new seats can offer in a couple of weeks......
