Excluding stations with the suffix "Road" or "Parkway".

Tring, Kirkby Stephen and Howden come to mind. All are over 1.5 miles away, I presume from the town centre.

Dent, and both Yeovil stations (especially Junction) must be some of the furthest away. Though Dent village itself is tiny anyway.

Saunderton seems an obvious one. The village is tiny and nearer to Princes Risborough then the station by quiet some distance. The station is the one in the middle yet the village is just south of Princes Risborough

Ridgmont

Rugeley Trent Valley is on the otherside of the motorway to the town

Dent would be my selection ....even when the network was much bigger it was often quoted as being second only to Gatehouse of Fleet for being a long walk from the village (over 4 miles). Rugeley Trent Valley is quite close to the town ....and the "motorway" is actually a fairly ordinary bypass.

Micheldever in Hampshire is 2.6 miles from the village of Micheldever, even though the line actually runs much closer to the village. However, it was opened as Andover Road (close to what is now the A303), before there was a railway serving Andover. Once Andover had its own station, 'Andover Road' was simply renamed after the nearest settlement.

To further muddy the waters, isn't the area surrounding the station now known as the village/hamlet of "Micheldever Station"?

Clapham(N Yorks) and Giggleswick are both a fair way from the villages they are named for.
Weeton station is actually in Huby, but actually not far from Weeton (Leeds - Harrogate line)

Dent’s gotta be my bet, 4.4 miles of footpathless roads, and 400ft of climb between the village and station.

Perhaps missing out on a technicality of not serving a town, village or even hamlet is Corrour, a similar distance, on foot, from Corrour lodge which was built after the station, the old lodge was further away.

If we include stations suffixed “Road” which I originally did not, we find some interesting survivors, although many have closed because, as the name suggests, they were remote from the places they served. This style of naming seems to have been favoured by the GWR and LSWR, but not exclusively. Some of these stations serve, or served, more than one village, the one after which the station was named not always being the nearest. (This list obviously excludes the many urban stations named after a local road.)

Three remain in Wales - Clarbeston Road, Builth Road and Llanbister Road. The village of Clarbeston Road, which has grown up round the station, is now bigger than Clarbeston, 4 km away.

In the West Country we have Morchard Road (named after Morchard Bishop) and St. Columb Road, which serves the villages of Indian Queens, Fraddon and St Columb Road but is 4.5 km from St. Columb Major. Bodmin Road was renamed Bodmin Parkway in 1983.

In the New Forest there is Beaulieu Road, but Lyndhurst Road was renamed Ashurst (New Forest) in 1995.

Farningham Road station in Kent is 3km from Farningham but much nearer the villages of South Darenth and Sutton-at-Hone.

Three others are in East Anglia. Harling Road (serving the village of East Harling) and Eccles Road are next to each other. I read that Eccles Road takes its name from the abandoned village of Eccles 1.5 km south of the station. In the 1990s, a new village was built adjacent to the station, and this now bears the name Eccles*. 'Road' in the station name is now an anachronism but renaming is not likely for obvious reasons. Roughton Road does not really belong in this group as it’s named after a road on the edge of Cromer. * There's also Eccles-on-Sea on the Norfolk coast!

Micheldever station - similarly Ferryhill Station and Widdrington Station.

Dent's not just a long walk, but there's also the massive difference in height between village and station to be overcome. I seem to remember reading somewhere that it's about 500'.

Not quite on topic, because the station closed many years ago, pre-Beeching. Sawdon station in North Yorkshire, between Pickering and Scarborough, was two or three miles from the hamlet after which it was named, while being in (or on the edge of) the larger village of Brompton-by-Sawdon. So why they missed the first two words off I don't know.

Heighington. 1.8 miles by rod from the centre of the village. Much closer to Aycliffe Village. Should be rename "Aycliffe Industrial Estate" since that is what it serves.

If we are allowed closed railways then two on the Port Road must be in with a shout

Gatehouse of Fleet about 6 miles away
New Galloway an impressive 8 miles away

The current Thirsk ECML station is about a mile from the town centre whereas the Leeds and Thirsk Railway terminus, now a Tesco supermarket, was about 150 yards away.

I spent last weekend in Yeovil, Pen Mill station is only a pleasant 20 minute walk if you take the path through the country park. Unfortunately although it is well signposted from the town there doesn’t appear to be any signs at the station end.

Chester Road station is a 71-mile walk from Chester. Google maps suggests a pleasant 23 hour 12 minute stroll, largely alongside the scenic A51.

You could argue London ,depending on your location you can be a long way from the main line station you need to travel from.A friend lives in London but takes them an hour to get to Euston.

Menai Bridge (Beeching casualty) is worth a mention.

The town is on Anglesey; the station on the mainland.

So on different landmasses !

A bit cheeky but there must be loads of "namesakes" where one town of the same name has a station but the other one doesn't e.g. the station "Stonehouse" (in Gloucestershire) is 187 miles away from Stonehouse in South Lanarkshire! ;)

Cam and Dursley is (according to google) 3.3 miles from Dursley, the larger of the two towns in its name, and 2.4 miles from Cam
