Lea Valley lines: Exclusively 4 car 710 (AC-only) operating in pair

Have I missed something because I've never understood this; is there any reason these weren't ordered as 8 car trains since they're the only AC only 710s, they won't be interchanged, is it for them to run 4 car trains at weekends? sidings lengths? or something else

Thanks in advance for any info.

I don't honestly know, although the AC-only units can make it from the depot to the GOBLIN, so maybe it's still nominally for fleet flexibility.

Maybe they'll run shorter trains at the weekends or something ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It does occur to me that one very cheeky way for LO to get 4tph to Cheshunt and Enfield Town without more paths to Liverpool Street would be to split/join trains at Edmonton Green. This is just me making stuff up though.

Wait, do the 710s not have tripcocks fitted?

I'm not sure which comes first, the introduction of the 710 on to the NLL/WLL, or the migration of the Richmond branch to CBTC. LU is planning an 'overlay' system on top of three (Ed: corrected from four thanks @Dstock7080) aspect signals with TPWS which doesn't use trainstops.

Why didn’t they order 8 car units for the Lea Valley Lines? They could gain a bit more capacity without the middle cabs.

See post #1865. For the sake of flexibility, they need to keep the fleet uniform as a 4-car fleet as the units will be rotating between the Lea Valley Lines and the Romford-Upminster shuttle.

But even when the plan was for a solitary 315 on the shuttle the units were ordered as 4 car, so that can't be the original justification.

Except when the 710 order was made, it seemed TfL intended to continue to run Romford-Upminster with a 315...... <(

No, they have been out on weekends since the start of DC operation. Third one goes in tomorrow.
So you’re saying the DC has had more than one 710 running simultaneously? How do you check this?

Are these two 710s currently booked to run any specific diagrams during Mon-Fri off peaks?
The first diagram (0727 ex Euston etc) is the only one that had to be a 710 as it does driver training on some days, or stables at Watford if not. The other(s) are booked on paper (as everything has to be) but can bounce around elsewhere if required. If you position yourself mid-route won’t have to wait that long for one.

Three out on DC today as expected. Viewed one on Camden Bank, one Wembley and one Watford for the doubters

A day in the Capital found 258, 266 and 267 on Watford duties, 260 and 263 at Willesden and 261, 262, 264, 265, 268 and 269 on the Goblin Line.

Did my first Euston to Bushey 710 trip tonight (710 267). Sad to say that after 12 minute late start due to door problems, the hard seats proved the point, that these trains are not as comfortable as the ones they are to replace. After 501s, 313s, 378s - it looks like the last fleet I will be regularly using are a bit of a disappointment.

I travelled on 258 earlier this week and yes the seats are hard but no different to most new stock these days. My understanding is that the specification for most new stock is developed by the Government so its like buying a car you can have the basic model or a deluxe model with varieties inbetween. It apparently does not cost too much for better seats but taken over a large fleet it obviously adds up. Talking to a driver on the Goblin line he was praising the new units saying they were a pleasure to operate. However I did notice a number of door seals flapping in the breeze!
