Think you can see Lincoln Cathedral from a long way off . Can you see from ECML?

Yes, Lincoln Cathedral is easily visible from several miles of the ECML around Newark, provided it's not misty. It's obviously easier in the winter when there are no leaves on the trees so you have more time to scan the distance.

That’s a great photo - the stocky towers of the Minster are clearly visible. There’s a spot high in Sheffield where it’s been reported that the top of the Humber Bridge is visible in certain conditions. Would this be the same spot?

I believe it might be

My son tells me the tip of Lochnagar through a gap from the top of Cheviot. Anyone comment?

An impressive 111 miles from The Cheviot to Lochnagar.

It’s incredible to think that from the top of The Cheviot you can see Lochnagar in one direction (which has views to peaks in Caithness and Sutherland), and then in the other other direction from The Cheviot you can see Black Hambleton (which has views to Bleaklow Head in Derbyshire, which in turn can see Snowdon from there).

Now that's a photograph I'd like to see!

Which throws up something to ponder, as I don't have a clue myself. If from the top of Cheviot for example, you can see all the way from Bleaklow Head to Lochnagar, where do you think the longest example in the UK may be between 2 points via the 3rd if you get my drift?

According to that panorama link, it’s even further to Beinn a’Ghlo near Blair Atholl (112miles).

Well funnily enough I was up Lochnagar earlier this year on a clear day. Looking at the panoramic photo I took, and comparing it to panorama map, I can confirm that you’d need a really, really, really clear day to see the Cheviot!

Actually, I’ve just realised... in my earlier comment I’d mentioned the possible line of sight as (north to south): Lochnagar > The Cheviot > Black Hambleton > Bleaklow Head > Snowdon...

However, looking at Viewfinder Panoramas I can see that that can be cut down from:
Lochnagar > The Cheviot > Black Hambleton > Bleaklow Head > Snowdon
to...
Lochnagar > The Cheviot > Scafell Pike > Snowdon

Only just found this topic as I was searching for something else related to this 'line of sight' subject.....went up Blackpool Tower back in November 2016 and for the first time in all my trips up to the top, I was able to see Liverpool clearly, for reference, the Radio City Tower which can be made out as a thin stick about 1/4 in from the left on the attached pic, is 28.48 miles according to Google.....have managed a shot the other way from Liverpool (top of the Radio City Tower, formerly St Johns Beacon) looking towards Blackpool (where the tower could be made out....) but can't find it at the mo....also visible are the cranes at Seaforth Docks and various other tall buildings in the city.....

That’s an incredible photo, and a distant view of Liverpool that I’ve never seen before. I’ve never seen Liverpool as clear as that from Blackpool Tower, because mostly it’s been far too hazy or far too bright when looking south. I was trying to work out the cathedrals and I think I can pick them out using Radio City as a marker. The cranes at Seaforth are very distinct too.

Looking at it in reverse, I’ve been up on the roof of the Anglican Cathedral but haven’t been as fortunate to spot Blackpool Tower. The last time I went up the Cathedral I was hoping for a good view of Snowdonia but that wasn’t possible either. I did read somewhere a while ago that on exceptionally clear days it is possible to see the Liverpool skyline from the top of Snowdon, and that with strong binoculars it’s even possible to make out individual high-rise flats.

More zoomed in shot for you! you can easily make out West Tower & Alexandra Tower from their shape as well as more cranes & docks detail

Not sure if this counts? - a photo of high land in France (beyond Calais) from Broadstairs in Kent? 47 miles according to Google Maps.

Sorry - I got distracted, here it is downsized to 1200 pixels.
It's from November 2016, and was shot with my Eos 7D MkII with GPS & magnetic compass in use, so I know where I was pointing at. We couldn't see any hint of France the previous day. There's a tanker(?) just visible.
Great stuff! There's a tower on the left hand side, can anyone identify that?

I've now looked at my image file in GeoSetter (excellent software for this sort of thing) and note that I took the snap from Ramsgate, not Broadstairs as first mentioned.

That’s a great picture. I’ve only ever seen France from Folkestone, and that was one night with the lights of the French coast twinkling on the horizon.
