the new trains are very adequate indeed!
having travelled on a 755/4 I consider them to be a vast improvement on the 15x/170's

I would be curious as to what the actual problem is with 755/3 introduction.

745's can wait a while, the 90's+mk3's are mosly going off lease,so transfer deadlines not as critical as is the case with DMU's.
type approval should be concentrated on the regional sets.

I thought the 90s were going to go to freightliner to replace the 86/6s

Going to Freightliner is just one possibility for the 90s - I don't think anything has been confirmed or agreed yet as regards their future use.

I did hear the deal is done for around 13 for FL. Possibly sub-leased back to GA for a short period.

Two ex Anglia Class 90s are for Locomotive Services at Crewe.

Grand Central, Blackpool to Euston services might need 5 or 6 Class 90s, if it happens (originally using Class 91).

So that might only leave around 7 for Freightliner.

Or alternatively Grand Central could just get their parent company to get another group company supply them with some 90s that they already own but often need an overhaul / aren't getting used much...
Thus still leaving 13 for FL.

Has anyone heard anymore about attempts to preserve one of the 90's for heritage? I think they were talking about 90050 (the one that caught fire and is in storage?)
The sidings at Crown Point are full of Mark 3's in threes and fours, I guess de-branded and ready for their move on. Two more de-branded 170's have been in Norwich Station for a few days. Is that 6 gone now?
Better get a move on with the new Stadlers or, at the very least, it's going to be another winter of discontent..

90050 is fit only for scrap, I think it is barely more than a shell. Preserve one by all means, but that one would be a waste of money.

I'm all in favour of returning 90050 to operational status. But this view may be influenced by the fact I require it for haulage!

Given the state that it's in, I suspect that the only way 90050 will ever move again is if you provide the "traction" yourself and give it a push. All the components that have been removed from it should make it a bit lighter. :p Assuming that it's not rusted to the rails at this stage!

The stock is out of miles & due for overhaul. Some may return to traffic with GA.

Nothing surprising I suppose, more delays to introduction of 745s taking over Class 90 duties.. and also note your comment in the 745 thread dk1. 'Plans are afoot to extend leases on legacy stock and locos so something isn't right'. What a shame.. but then despite still hoping my commute home on the 17.00 express might be one of the first 745 services, I do love the 90's. 90003 was the first into passenger traffic on my birthday back in 88 (4 years after I started doing my daily commute!!)

If - and appreciate it’s only an if - the 90s go to FL to replace the 86s - will they operate in pairs or singly? Currently FL appear to operate solo 90s and double 86s - is that related to power / traction, or the loads of the respective services they are working?

Yes. Each class 90 operating in multiple will have one motor isolated thus both running on three legs.

After several trips on the new Stadler 745's I'm very impressed with the acceleration etc, but going back to the MK3's and you appreciate just how good they were/are. Sound insulation is better without the track level floors of the 745's, and leg room, lack of struts and heating ducts, is far better on the MK3's. So despite being impressed with the new offering , I will definitely feel sadness at the passing of the 90's and their rakes of undoubtedly comfortable MK3's.

Is that for the same reasons Eurostar sets only ran with 1 power car operating with GNER?

If I remember correctly, the isolation on the 373s were because of power limitations from the OHLE; whereas the (partial) isolation on the 86s/90s is/will be to save on maintenance, and to reduce wear and tear.

Happy to be corrected though :)

Pairs of 90s both on all 4 motors was drawing too much from the OHL during testing last year and thus was agreed to run them with an M3 restriction.

FL/DB have a modification available for their 90s which limits current draw from the overhead when used in pairs. So they are now permitted to run in pairs with all motors.

I believe the first MK3s have been sent for scrapping at Sims in Wales? I noticed a 37 with a few more behind today at Norwich as well. Goodbye old friends! I've not been as sad about a train since, after six years rusted to the sidings of Ipswich yard, 47370 was hauled to the muncher back in 2009. Oh but then come to think of it there was 'Hector' scrapped in 2011. Oh woe!

Would it allow the 'spare' motor to come into use should one of the active motors fail?

Will these be the first "normal" Mk3s to go for scrap?

The first of the current GA Fleet to go, yes. But not the first of the loco hauled variety. But they, like NL65, will be the worst condition Mk3s to go anyway.

I’m surprised there hasn’t been many photos etc of that scrap move to be fair!

Just old age, and where they happen to sit in the maintenance cycle. We all wear out at different rates.
