I can only assume they wanted the panels near the site but not in the way of ongoing earth moving and ballast laying, given installation is not likely until January/February.

As I was out to capture the 313 farewell tour I filled the time waiting for it between legs of its journey to record some footage for another update.

I noticed some markings on the siding that services the gravel yard and the up slow either side of the A602 road bridge. If anyone can shed some light on this it would help cure my curiosity. Track panels have been moved and lots of rail delivered to site.

Looks like Switch & Crossing renewal on the US with the track limits for lifting marked out.
Rail on the down side is probably for the new line and will be pulled in once the sleepers are laid.

Agreed - I also looks like a longer geometry S&C going in

I guess it makes sense to do any other upgrade work at the same time other major project require full / part closure of the lines in the area. It could be that the track modifications on the siding and up-slow have no part of the turnback project, but have been timed to coincide with events of that project.

Quite correct, S&C Renewals on the up side (aggregate siding and branch Hertford facing connection) commence this weekend with the siding crossover, nothing to do with the platform 5 works, but both projects sharing access.

How did you find that out?

Are you working on that renewal this weekend ? - do you have any timings (presumably the track will be lifted in the early hours ?)

Looks like the first part of the possession (Up Slow) is being taken around 2100 Sat, extended at around midnight Saturday night, with Single Line Working for a very restricted service via the Up Slow / P4 until 1000. The track should be out before the sun comes up.

No, the possession of the Up Slow continues through Sunday to early hours Monday.

However it is possible to do a single point end in 12 hours, I’ve seen it done!

Fortunately the rain left off, and by midnight Saturday the wind had dropped, but it was still cold

Here's a video of the work that took place.

From the information I gleaned from the guys on site, the track panels that were delivered last week are for the section that forms the junction itself, which are scheduled to be installed over this coming weekend (2nd - 3rd Nov). The panels for the work that took place over the weekend just passed were delivered via road Saturday night.

I've also been told by a contact at the Spencer Group that permanent way work on the turnback is planned to take place this coming Friday (between 6am and 1pm). I'm guessing that given all the cranes, ballasting trains etc etc will be on site it makes sense to install the switch on the down line of the Hertford loop at the same time ?

Maybe local but it was jolly cold!
Are you planning a further vigil next weekend?

I must admit by 3am I couldn't feel my feet !

Not sure - I have some family commitments which take priority, and I've received info that the turnback work may be delayed until December. The Junction is also further away, so most of the filming will need to be on higher zoom which is harder to maintain when shivering !! :) -

In my early days I once stood in a large London graveyard for a 2am shoot - just a few lights and very cold extremities!
So understood and appreciated.

As far as I know the switch (or point whatever you want to call it) was scheduled to be changed this weekend, but personal commitments and the weather means I won't be covering that.

I had heard on the grapevine that the switch on the turnback may be installed 1st - 2nd December..... All being well I'll be there for that

Popped down there this morning. Hard to see how far they have got, but it looks like the new switch is in on the up slow at Langley Junction.

In the past week there has been some developments with the turnback project as the first sleepers have been laid, so things progressing on that side too.

I also managed to video the train taking all the old ballast, cut up rails and sleepers away from the site.

Hi malc-c thanks for video - good to see the sleepers on the curve.
Re the switch at Langley junction - is it welded in the down running line - presumably 'locked off' in some way.
Excuse the low level of knowledge here!
