Was wondering actually how many 67s
still see service these days as they are little used.
I know one works Gerald and one on the North Wales coast.
How many are allocated to ECML Thunderbird duties.?
And do any ever appear on freight.
I guess the majority of the class are stored
rotting away at Crewe Electric or Toton.

Would be nice to see a revival in them tbh.

IIRC TfW have a spare 67 as well. Do we know how many locos are undergoing mods for Mk4 compatibility?

I also think two are assigned to Royal Train duties

I'm trying to think of a more shameful waste of assets than the 67s.

Nothing springs to mind

After having driven them I'm trying to think of a more shameful waste of money than buying them in the first place .......

What are/were their failings?

Am I right in thinking that they were basically procured to work mail trains......which then promptly ceased to operate?

Are they designed to haul anything heavier than coaching stock?

If I remember correctly TFW are getting 7 skips for future use on the Gerald and Manchester once they receive the ex-LNER Mk4 stock(?). There was something on FB a while ago I’ll have a look later.

So many locos sitting idle. If we had 300 less 66's the railways would be more interesting.

Even less freight than now along with the inability to compete for new flows, that's a strange definition of interesting.

Their inability to pull the skin off a rice pudding due to their very low (for the installed HP) tractive effort does not render them very useful as mixed traffic locos.

Thanks for all the replies.
I forgot the 2 Royals and 2 Colas ones.

Yes it is shameful that modern powerful locomotives are laid up unused.

Perhaps the loss of so much freight work is the main reason.

Perhaps if loco hauled passenger trains make a comeback maybe then we could see a mass reinstatement of the said sidelined 67s.

Only a fantasy, but it would be nice to see 67s+mk3s or mk4s+DVT on the longer routes that warrant more than a 2 car unit.

67025 made a comeback today on a test run to Stafford in Transport for Wales livery, so that's one that should be in use with the mark 4s.

Aren't the 67s rather thirsty, hence Chiltern replacing them with 68s to haul their Mk3s instead?

67025 along with 67008 and 67029 allocated on TOPS to the Chilterns pool (WACC). The Wales pool (WAWC) shows 67001/12-14.

Maybe some reallocations to come.

Why is there a Chilterns pool considering its been five years since they withdrew them?

There's been a 67 hauling the Inverness portion of the sleeper and it's been back on the sleeper recently with a 73 hauling the new mk 5's.

I reckon their best use is cases where there are tiny loco hauled trains that they could work on
DRS Nuclear trains spring to mind
NR stuff
possibly snowplow/leaf mulch stuff etc.
Bear in mind, I'm assuming they use less fuel than something like a 37 or 66 which I gather is a big assumption to make.
Or we could do a typical pro BR rant and say they should be stationed all over the place and just used for thunderbird duties
