Hello All,

I'm new here so hope this is an acceptable post.

For such jobs as above nothing is mentioned in the essential criteria in terms of technical knowledge. Does that mean no knowledge is assumed, and full training is given, or do they test technical knowledge at eg interview? Because if so they should probably be clearer in their job ads!

Also, they have driving under desirable rather than essential - is it likely that they hire anyone who can't drive?

Thank you very much for your help :)

I'm no expert, but irrespective of the company and position, employers can't discriminate so use phrases like "desirable" so that someone who doesn't drive and would use public transport to get to work doesn't object and sue them...

Obviously in some jobs it would be obvious that a task is essential. You wouldn't advertise a vacancy for a bus driver using the same phrase as any applicant would need to have passed their driving test, so it would be a requirement for that role.

It may well be that in this position with Network Rail driving isn't essential as the role means you would be in teams or working with someone who can drive, so its not essential, especially if you have the skills to match the other criteria.

Thank you. I agree about the driving but am more curious that the adverts for overhead line operatives doesn't mention any technical skills required in relation to that?

Is this for an apprenticeship or a "normal" job - can you provide a link to the advert
