i use recenttraintimes.co.uk and it seems quite good, but sometimes it will say unknown journey or something and in that case i'd like to consult another site to check, which ones would people advise?

What is the purpose of the check. Do you want to check what is running on the day or planning ahead or want real time information?

I can't seem to make sense of realtraintimes.
I don't understand it's search facility of 'location when and where'
If i just wanted to search london st pancras to Folkestone say a week ago, then how do i do it?

With RTT you need to look for the train you want, not the route. So you would enter STP and the time of departure, it will give you all the trains around that time then you need to find your train. You have to get the data within 7 days of your journey, or else they may remove it from access. And some options to filter the results are not available after the end of the day when the train runs.

It's mainly to see the times trains arrived late in order to make a delay repay claim

RTT doesn't have the storage of data over 7 days old.
The system, as a whole, at NRs end automatically drops the data from the system after 7 days.

There are two sites I know and use for data in excess of seven days old:
RECENT train times - https://www.recenttraintimes.co.uk/

And Charlwood House - http://charlwoodhouse.co.uk/rail/liverail

Both work in the same way ss RTT, described above.

The latter being extremely useful as they keep the real time data for a year. RTT doesn't have this facility, but to be honest it doesn't need it as someone else is kind enough to provide it for public consumption. Not even Trust can provide that, as for the aforementioned data droppage.

If you need a hand with Charlwood House, let us know which train you're looking for (including the date ;)).

You can’t trust RTT. The train I am currently on (0952 Aberdeen to Kings X) is show “not stopping” at Inverkeithing. We just stopped there!

That always happens for LNER trains at Inverkeithing. I believe it's something to do with the fact that the front of the train goes past the signal at the end of the station (as it's too long for the platform) so occupies the next track circuit when stationary.

A similar thing happens with the northbound lowlander sleeper at Carstairs which runs past the Glasgow end signal on platform 1 and is often therefore shown as departing early.

I was just going to ask about the reliability of RTT and which is the most reliable site to use if checking against delay repay claims?

www.trainclaimer.com keeps data indefinitely but it's only been going for 18 months or so, longer for Thameslink (it started as a different site for Thameslink only).

Subscribers (from £2.50 a year for the basic plan) can see all data, colour coded based on lateness/cancelled status. You can also filter by destination if you wish. Subscribers can also get daily emails and automatic claim notifications.
