Qualified driver changing TOC’s - Recruitment process

Hi.

Does anybody have any experience or know what is involved in a qualified driver applying for a job with another TOC?

I know of the ATOC B1 Form (sharing of safety information) but wondered the process going forward.

I imagine all TOC’s are different but once you have your European Drivers License is it just a case of a medical and a simple interview or do you have to go through all of the psychometric tests again and other stages that a Trainee Driver would?

Any help gratefully received. Thanks.

I think every TOC/FOC is different but from memory, you do a rules assessment on the day and have to do an interview usually with a driver/depot manager. Psychometric testing doesn’t need to be done again but a medical needs to be done.

As I say, the process will vary between train companies.

Brilliant, thanks for the reply. What you say was pretty much what I expected and seems logical.

When I did it it was -

application form, safety of line form, interview, medical - offer.

On arrival at new toc - induction, traction training, rules review, route learning.

Interesting question.

Is there a minimum period of time (like a probation) you have to serve before being allowed to apply for a different TOC?

Depends. EMR took some of our driver's with just one.

Literally depends on TOC, minimum will be an interview and the need for the B1 form followed by medical if successful.
but some TOC’s will throw in a couple of psychometric tests or even a group interview recruitment day to help whittle the numbers down, ultimately yes your qualified but your still applying for a new job and they don’t all let you in easily

I thought most tocs you had to be productive for 2 years. Having said that, a aslef bloke did mention that people have left for less and the company can't really do much.

Every company is different. Crosscountry used to want 3 or 5 years experience but now, for example, it’s only 18 months

I think drivers remain pre-qualified until they have two years experience but I know a driver who transferred within a couple of months of gaining his key.

Eccles1983 did they do references and dbs check?

I think so. I had to be vetted by an external company, but the extent of it wasn't disclosed to me.

Nope, once passed out you're fully qualified - that's why it's called the Post Qualified Assesment period

That what I meant clever clogs.

My point is that you don’t need to be qualified for two years
