Hello

My first message on the forum so hope I’m posting this in the right place.

I booked a rail and sail ticket on TrainLine from London Euston to Belfast via Glasgow and travelling on the Cairnryan/Belfast ferry. My train ticket is an Anytime ticket and I’ve been reserved on a 5.30am train. However, I can no longer travel until the evening on the same day.

Given that it’s an Anytime train ticket, can I still use it to travel on the 6pm train to Glasgow? I plan to stay there overnight and will our has another ferry ticket for the next morning. Using the rail and sail ticket to Glasgow is much cheaper than booking a stand-alone train ticket to Glasgow.

I just wanted to check if this is ok? Or are there extra restrictions of an anytime rail and sail ticket?

many thanks!!

This one? http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=EUS&dest=BFA&grpo=1072&grpd=M190&rte=989&ldn=1&tkt=SOR ?

Unfortunately these are not regular Anytime tickets (most of them have been renamed to SailRail Standby to remove this confusion, while introducing a different type of confusion as they aren't standby tickets either), and (due to the very low fare) Break of Journey is not permitted, so unfortunately this would not be valid.

You might be able to change the ferry reservation, perhaps, or refund it which would just be against the usual £10 admin fee then book another for your intended ferries?

No break of journey permitted, except to change trains:

I don't know how that would work given you arrive in Glasgow after the last train/bus to Cairnryan. You may be required to travel on the first Ayr train in the morning, assuming national condition of carriage which used to say that for tickets with no break allowed.

Thanks very much for getting back to me. Would the person checking my ticket know i’d be breaking my journey? Or would they just care that it says Anytime on the ticket? I’d be also happy buying a new train ticket to cairnryan the next morning as that’s not too expensive.

VTWC are quite hot on people using "no BoJ" tickets to circumvent Anytime restrictions, though if the time you travel is Off Peak then they may be less bothered. You do however risk having to purchase a new ticket.

Thank you very much.

I did wonder what would stop someone buying a cheaper rail & sail ticket just for the London to Glasgow leg rather than paying the much more expensive standalone train ticket.

This is ticket I bought for £56...

You'd be much more likely to be caught with that. As it is an Anytime Day Single, it has no validity past 0430 on day two, and overnight break of journey is not allowed under any circumstances (other than service disruption). So if you were on a train that didn't connect with a ferry it would be obvious that you intended to end short.

Thanks again. That all makes sense. I think I’ll just need to get a refund on the rail and sail ticket and book a separate train ticket and ferry. The advice is very appreciated!!

Interesting if you go to national rail app..

The morning train can get you to Belfast same day, so it offers £56 single.

The evening departure from Euston can't make it In one day, so a return is offered: the open return has a 5-day outward validity not 1. As this adds to £112, that isn't a help for you, but perhaps you could swap your single for return - if you plan to come back within the month?

That’s really useful. Thanks very much! That might actually workout cheaper than a standalone train ticket.

Is this anytime day single ticket valid via King's Cross to Glasgow via Edinburgh? If so what's to stop someone getting an Edinburgh terminating train or an Aberdeen one and then travelling to Queen St Glasgow? They'd have to leave the station then to transfer to Central.........and might get so distracted by the attractions of Glasgow that they fail to travel onward to Belfast. Unenforceable I'd say.

That's not the issue. The issue is that if he travels in the evening he is going to run out of trains/ferries that day forcing an overnight break, and overnight breaks are not allowed on Day tickets, the "if you can't complete in a day" thing does not apply to them. So it will be obvious from the point of boarding what he's doing.

The 18.00 National Express Coach from Victoria gets you to Belfast 09.15 next morning. Wouldn't be my first choice but its better than overnighting in Glasgow. £55 for tonight, nearer £20 if booked a couple of weeks in advance.

According to Bahn.de the OP could get the 1657 Euston to Glasgow and by changing there arrive at Stranraer 0056. Alternatively take the 1730 to Carlisle, change there and go to Kilmarnock to change onto the same Stranraer train there arr 0056. There's a 0345 sailing from Cairnryan to Belfast arrives 0600. I wonder if, as the OP would be aboard well before the 0430am deadline that'd be a valid route/timing? Not sure how to get to the ship at that time of night except for a taxi?

Or on the same basis even 1830 to Ayr via Glasgow? Rather depends how Stena interpret the 0429 rule in each case, and I agree that the best option is to rebook.

Thank you everyone for all your advice and suggestions. This was my first query on this forum and I’ve been blown away by the detail in the responses. I’ve decided to rebook as one of the reasons I travel by train is to have a relaxing journey...and I don’t want the worry of not having the correct ticket and potentially having to pay a huge anytime fare on board. The rail and sail ticket would have been perfect for me if I didn’t have to work the day I need to travel but as I can’t leave until the evening I’m travelling to Glasgow on an off peak ticket, overnighting there, then getting the earliest ScotRail to Stranraer via Ayr. Much more expensive but still gets me to Ireland on time.
